Mazda’s main exhibit for the 26th Tokyo Motor Show in 1985 was the MX-3, a highly advanced sport coupe concept with a turbocharged triple-rotor engine, 4-wheel drive, and 4-wheel steering. Mazda reported that the MX-3 could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds and reach 186 mph. The interior featured an aircraft-style yoke instead of a steering wheel. It never made it into production, but some of its technology and the triple-rotor engine were used for the Eunos Cosmo of 1990.

Saw this rare classic today on my lunch break. A NSU Ro 80, a Wankel engine powered sedan that was build between 1967 and 1977.

So in Japan itself, between population density and Mazda-inspired knowledge base, was the assumption that everyone would have access to a mechanic who knows what to do with a Wankel engine?
