Last night, nearly every Senate Republican voted against reining in Trump and his reckless war with Iran.
Remember when we had this thing in the United States called "Congress" that was a check on the Executive Branch? I mean, it was usually pretty terrible and ineffective, but it did actually exist at one point. In fact, there used to be a whole Legislative Branch that was very protective of its co-equal Constitutional role. I don't remember changing the Constitution to get rid of it, but I guess I just wasn't paying attention when that happened.
Orange Hitler wants to rule as a dictator answerable to nobody.
Sen. Ruben Gallego said he will introduce a war powers resolution to forestall a U.S. invasion of the Danish territory.
Donald Trump is farting out of his mouth again about seizing Greenland. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) wants the US Senate to pass a war powers resolution to prevent him from taking military action.
Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego wants Congress to forestall a U.S. takeover of Greenland, requiring President Donald Trump to get lawmakers’ approval for any such action after this weekend’s military incursion into Venezuela. Gallego said he will introduce a war powers resolution focused on Greenland, an semiautonomous territory of Denmark that Trump has repeatedly suggested should be part of the U.S. instead. “We must stop him before he invades another country on a whim,” Gallego wrote on social media. “No more forever wars.”
Trump is completely nuts and most Republicans on Capitol Hill know this. But they keep kowtowing to his bizarre whims anyway.
Back in Greenland, they have their own version of "MAGA" caps.
Updates April 14, 2026: House and Senate Democrats have introduced new war powers resolutions to rein in the Trump administration’s military
"April 14, 2026: House and Senate Democrats have introduced new war powers resolutions to rein in the Trump administration’s military action against Iran. Floor votes in both chambers are expected this week."
"Congress cannot allow Trump to start and exploit devastating geopolitical conflicts for his own benefit. Call your representatives and tell them to assert their constitutional authority over this unjustified and unnecessary war of choice."
Jim Wright
Trump woke up in full on tyrant mode. Imagine thinking Congress finally doing its Constitutionally mandated job of checks and balances is somehow "unpatriotic." Imagine thinking that unlimited, unchecked presidential power is somehow "American." And most of all imagine being TRUMP and calling anyone else "Grandstanders," that's some irony indeed. As to "negotiations to end the war," LOL. Trump, like he always does, just lost interest when things didn't go the glorious way he imagined they would. So, now, his idea of "victory" is to declare bankruptcy and walk away leaving everyone else holding the bag. Classic Trump. Winning! Meanwhile, over on Truth Social a post or two before declaring victory in Iran, he tells us "If you add the largest Tax and Regulation Cuts in U.S. History, $5000 to $10,000 per family, coupled with falling prices across the board from the Sleepy Joe Biden years, “TRUMP” & THE REPUBLICANS WIN THE AFFORDABILITY WARS by record numbers!" So ... if you just ignore the cost of gas and groceries and rent and healthcare and insurance and the cost of just barely living and then you add in that tax cut you didn't actually get and divide that by inflation, well, turns out it's somehow Joe Biden's fault and didn't Trump tell us affordability was a hoax anyway? And still somehow, it's yet another great victory for Trump! Another war he's somehow won! Hooorah! Yeah. Elect an idiot, get Idiocracy.
Resolution was expected to fail but introduction signals unease on Capitol Hill about conflict with no clear endgame
Joseph Gedeon at The Guardian:
An attempt by House Democrats to pass a long-shot resolution on Thursday curtailing Donald Trump’s war powers over Iran failed after the Republican pro forma speaker, Chris Smith, did not recognize lawmakers from the opposite party on the floor. The vote, scheduled for Thursday morning, used a procedure called unanimous consent, which is a shortcut that allows legislation to pass the chamber instantly, without debate or a formal tally, so long as not a single member objects. Any one lawmaker can kill the resolution by simply objecting, and Republicans were expected to do exactly that. Glenn Ivey, a Democratic representative from Maryland, attempted to be recognized on the floor, but Smith ended the session immediately. There were a handful of other Democrats in attendance who objected loudly.
The move from Republicans was expected to be blocked, but its introduction was a signal of unease on Capitol Hill about a Middle Eastern conflict on pause with no clear endgame. The temporary ceasefire announced on Tuesday is already showing serious cracks. Israel has continued to strike Lebanon claiming it is hunting Hezbollah, though Iran insists it was covered by the truce – a claim both the US and Israel reject. Lebanese authorities say the latest wave killed at least 254 people and injured another 837 people, and totally levelled buildings in central Beirut.
Iran has reportedly halted oil tanker traffic through the strait of Hormuz again, according to Iran’s Fars News, just hours after the first vessels were allowed through. No official ceasefire text has been released, and JD Vance has called it a “fragile” ceasefire. The UN secretary-general warned that continued Israeli military activity in Lebanon “poses a grave risk” to the deal. Against that backdrop, Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, pressed ahead. In a letter to colleagues on Wednesday, he expressed significant doubt in the ceasefire.
Republicans blocked the Democrats’ push to curb Donald Trump’s war powers in Iran.
