Private William Coder, Company F, 106th Pennsylvania volunteers, shows damage to his maxillary bone and jaw as a result of a wound received on August 25th, 1864 at the Battle of Weldon Railroad, Virginia. Attended by Dr. J.C. McKee. Caption reads: “Shell wound, portion of body of lower jaw carried away. Pvt. Wm Coder 106th Pa.”

Would any knowledgeable person care to wade in with an explanation? Is it meant to be the war-injury that affected his eyesight? Or has MK been coshed on set by a jealous husband?

Wounded August 20, 1864, Battle of Weldon Railroad. Gunshot wound through gluteal region and pelvis. Ball Admitted to hospital August 24, 1864 in "healthy" condition.
Hemorrhage occurred Sept. 4 and plugged. Internal iliac artery tied Sept. 12, common iliac artery tied after hemorrhage recurred. Death: September 14, 10 AM.
Cause of death: Secondary haemorrhage.
