I'm sad we won't find out if Ikora Rey becomes Vanguard Commander. It has been a few years of getting little hints to it. After Targe died in Final Shape, I was very quickly wondering what Bungie would do with Zavala. Episode: Hersey gave us our first major change in the Mirror Imago lore entry. In it, Ikora tells Chalco she is going to be helping out with the vanguard even more and it's a full time job and she can't be the hidden leader anymore (she doesn't specify why, but it's obvious it's because Zavala is lightless and is stepping back a bit). Ikora wanted Chalco to become the hidden leader. Chalco of course agrees, saying she would've been mad if Ikora asked anyone else. And then in Edge of Fate, the Nine kept referring to Ikora as "Commander." Ikora even is annoyed at this, wonder why they keep calling her this.

Like I initially thought Zavala might step down, either stepping down as just Commander and staying Titan Vanguard or completely stepping down. But is the Nine planning on killing him? Or do they consider him so unessential to their machinations that they just call Ikora Commander instead?

And who would become Titan Vanguard after Zavala? They did a good job exploring the possibility of Crow becoming hunter vanguard long before he became a vanguard. But like most of the Titan's are kinda doing other things. Sloane is partially Taken and it seems like she's fine with having a lesser position. Saladin is on Caiatl's council (I guess Zavala and him could switch, but I don't see that happening). Saint has helped in a temporary capacity being titan Vanguard during the Final Shape, but I can't imagine he'd take it again and he's the trials vendor. And Lord Shaxx is busy with Crucible. Orin is another titan who now isn't emissary, so it's possible, but I can't see it (and she's lightless too).

And the whole thing with the city being in a very unstable place politically. Season of the Splicer was definitely one of my favorite seasons in terms of city politics lore. Bungie was definitely working towards another big change with the city's structure. It would've been interesting to see what they would've done with all this. I mainly just want to see my favorite warlock be commander, but also I just can't imagine who would fill the role of Titan Vanguard at this point.

Ikora-Rey Headcannons:

Time for more headcannons y’all- this time it’s our Warlock Vanguard Ikora!!

Ikora gets the biggest migraines some days- due to stress, work, Guardians, Cayde or being a Warlock, the reason varies each time

Ikora is fluent in most languages, lost or newly developing (this helps her to talk to her Warlocks without others listening in)

Feeling ill, run down or stressed? Ikora will happily put down the thing she is working on, make the Guardian their preferred beverage and talk with them

Once or twice a week, Ikora holds meditation sessions for all to attend to

Ikora is lesbian and is happily married to her Titan Guardian

Ikora and Hawthorn get on well, with both being near each other in the tower- they talk in their free time and hang out

Ikora has a flat near the Vanguards station incase an emergency happens again (like the Red War)

Ikora knows everyone’s names somehow- even civilians that she may only meet once or twice

Mum friend and she doesn’t respite this fact either

When Cayde starts whining about being bored in the tower, Ikora will somehow have a piece of Vex tech (from Asher of course) for him to play with or send Cayde on small missions around the EDZ

Her and the Speaker are like brother and sister, they both care for each other immensely

Ikora is a good cook

Late nights in the Warlock barracks? Ikora will most likely be there, making sure the Warlocks eat and get a decent amount of sleep

Always has a book on her to read and a small notebook, no matter what

When Cayde decides to play pranks/tricks on everyone at the Tower- Ikora is the only one who he avoids, because surprisingly she is good at pranks as well

She makes regular trips to Titan and Io to make sure both Asher and Sloane aren’t too lonely

Ikora has a small garden near the Warlock barracks that hold different types of plants and vegetables from different planets that can grow on Earth

Remembers everyone’s birthday that stays on the tower, on their ships or on other planets

Every Christmas, it’s common to get a card from Ikora and a small token (the token varies each year)

Has two cats, a calico named Jewel (female) and a pure black called Skeeva (male)

Likes to knit and crochet with Zavala on quiet nights

Can’t stand lightning storms, something with the static electricity in the air unsettles both her and the light within her

Loves rain storms, the sound of the rain falling is calming
