Relay for Life is a walk for breast cancer awareness at 1402 19th street Huntsville from 6 - 10 p.m. on October 14.
Participants from around Huntsville, respective people from Houston walk the distance, often as a tribute to survivors. The American Cancer Foundation depends on donations to help find the cure for Breast cancer and to promote awareness.
“The students in here are starving to make a difference for people they know with cancer and for those who had someone who has died from it,” said Kachi Oniya. Member of Theta Rho chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. “ it’s like a walk for breast cancer awareness cause we need to get revenge on the disease.”
The relay is unique in that participants are welcomed in an opening ceremony. Then, the Survivor Lap takes place where survivors and people currently affected by cancer walk the track and are supported by attendees. The Caregiver Lap recognizes those who have provided support to loved ones during their cancer treatment. After survivors and caregivers take their laps, teams take the track to begin the celebration. Closing ceremonies wrap up the event.
For student volunteers relaying participants, purpose is to help the Phi Beta Sigma sponsors. American Cancer Foundation walk students can contact Jacory Bellnamy [email protected] for more information.
