a very good change ;)
it was only a matter of time tbh ;)
immediately tosses it aside and cradles jim in his arms
star trek au where they all wear jorts
They’re stationed at Yorktown again, and nothing makes Sulu happier than feeling his husband’s hand in his, and hearing his daughter’s voice as she shows him all the things she’s learned in classes.
“Uncle Jim! Look what I made!”
“What is it squirt?”
It’s no surprise Jim was an instant hit with Demora, anyone willing to give frequent piggy backs without complaint, and tell stories of great adventures in space was a shiny toy to be coveted to six year olds the galaxy over, so Jim often joins Sulu and his family on trips to Yorktown’s park.
“It’s a drawing of Jaylah, do you think she’ll like it?” She doesnt make it easy for Jim; the drawing is about two inches away from his face from where she’s sat on his shouders, and Sulu is reasonably sure the drawing is upside down, but Jim’s grin is blinding all the same.
“What do you mean do I think she’ll like it? She’s gonna love it! You got her radio in there and everything! Have you shown your dads this?” She starts scrambling down from Jim’s shoulders to show them, no concern for falling, but Jim’s used to Demora’s lack of an attention span and is already crouching down to make it easier.
And it is a good drawing, but then again, this is the seventh drawing of Jaylah his daughters done this month. Honestly he’s just glad she didn’t choose Spock to fixate on.
But as soon as Demora’s back into her father’s arms, and Jim’s safely out of the firing line, Sulu hangs back, waving Ben to walk on with their daughter.
“Thank you for that, I know she can be a bit… energetic.”
Jim just laughs and waves his hand as if to dismiss the gratitude.
“She’s great, don’t worry about it. Besides, I need to do some sucking up if I want to get a drawing of my own. It’s not really fair, Jaylah’s got like what? Five or six? I’m the Captain and I don’t get a drawing?”
“You do get a fancy chair to sit in, maybe she just doesn’t want you to get greedy.”
Jim laughs and Sulu thinks maybe, just maybe this time he’s done it. But then, he realises he hasn’t at all, Jim’s just getting better at tricking them, and it makes his chest tighten painfully that he’s starting to miss the signs.
Jim loves Demora, he’d give everything he’s got to defend Hikaru’s little girl, and Hikaru’s never doubted that for a second. But seeing Demora, watching Sulu and his family, it’s hard for Jim.
It’s a painful reminder of what Jim could’ve had. The husband, the kid, the lazy days relaxing in the park. Jim could’ve had it all.
Instead he got a stuttered goodbye and a phaser scar ripping through his shoulder, the memory as painful as the actual wound.
“I’m gonna go see Bones, are you guys gonna be okay with the squirt?” Jim’s smiling at him, its a cheerful quirk of the lips, and the newer crew members can’t even tell it from his real smiles, but Sulu can.
All of them can, those that knew Jim from before.
“We’ll be fine. Listen, Jim, I can come with you if you want company..” Jim’s already waving him off again, smile still in place.
“Nah, you go have fun Sulu. I’ll catch up with you later.” He’s walking off before Hikaru can argue, speed too slow to be rushing, but too controlled to be natural.
“He’s going already?” Ben appears behind him, Demora safely caught up in some sort of video game, too distracted to protest Jim’s departure.
“It’s hard for him, being here.” Sulu soaks in the image of his daughter safely perched on his husband’s shoulders, his entire world in one place, and then turns to catch the last glimpse of blonde hair disappearing into the crowd. “It’s hard for him wherever he is. It’s nearly been a year.”
Ben grabs his hand and Hikaru squeezes it tight.
Jim could’ve had this. The husband, the kid, the lazy days in the park. Jim could’ve had it all.
But Bones dived in front of the phasers aimed at Jim’s back, and all he got was a blood soaked ring pressed into his hand and a choked ‘It was you for me, kid. It was always you.’
Jim could’ve had it all, but instead he got a grief that haunts him from Bones’ grave to the very corners of the galaxy.
are we doing wounded mccoy? him and spock are paired up on an away mission and trapped, with no way to contact the ship because of an ion storm. mccoy is wounded, knows just by the blood soaked in his shirt and the purple bruising at his side that he hasn't got long without medical aid. spock is distracted by his communicator, and mccoy wonders how long it'll be until he figures it out. until then... well, no point in being completely useless. sittin' here, bleeding out, ain't gonna fix a thing
so he starts tracing ever line, every curve, every detail of spock
committing every part of him to memory and letting all his favorite ones rise to the surface of his mind as he thinks ‘this is it this is my end’ and he wants to hang out but his eyes are getting heavier and the pain is getting colder
Summary: "What do you want? A kiss or something for good luck?” There was a pause, one that made Jim hold his breath in a blood-pumping, heart-pounding moment that was probably anticipation. Slowly, Spock raised his hand, two fingers extended towards Jim in a secret vulcan embrace that wasn’t so secret, because Jim totally knew about it.
