I can't stop drawing comparisons between chapter 1 Sakura and Sakura now. On his first day of school, he was ready to fight anyone and everyone. Every single person was his enemy.
His response to being attacked now?
He went from a hotheaded fighter to a calm and composed leader, willing to extend grace to others even when they don't give it to him. All it took was love and acceptance from others.
Sakura hasn't suddenly learned empathy. This isn't a sudden revelation or an epiphany moment for him. Sakura has always been a kind, sweet person, but the world beat him down until he was forced to hide his softness behind bluster and aggression to survive.
Going to Furin High, making friends, and finding community helped him feel safe enough to be kind and gentle. To show 'weakness.' I think the final turning point was when he saw himself reflected in Natsuki, angry and afraid.
Sakura sees himself in Momojikawa. He recognizes the anger, and underneath that, the fear and the broken spirit. He's finally ready to offer the same helping hand that he was offered way back when, because he understands.
