brightheart, cloudtail, and daisy

i reallllly hate how the drama with them in tnp is handled. like a lot. it makes cloudtail seem like a jerk for no apparent reason so leafpool can be jealous of brightheart because plot.

however, i think it could be an interesting character moment if i rework it. the big thing that canon really didn't address that i think would make this whole thing work much better is that cloudtail is a former kittypet.

so, for my rewrite, when cloudtail meets daisy, a new mom who has just run away from her twolegs and doesn't know how to survive on her own, and who is being judged by everyone else in the clan, he immediately decides he's going to be on her side. he's going to help her and do whatever she needs to fit in with the clan and make sure she doesn't repeat his mistakes.

brightheart knows this, and she knows that cloudtail is not in love with daisy. but, she can also see that daisy is falling for cloudtail, where cloudtail himself is completely oblivious. she is upset because cloudtail is spending all his time and effort on daisy, and talks about daisy constantly. she knows he's just trying to help, she can see that the drive to help those he cares about is what made him stick by her all through her injuries and recovery after the dog attack, and she's proud that he's sticking up for daisy too. she just sees that cloudtail doesn't realize that he's neglecting her in the process, and she's sad that he doesn't notice how upset she is.

cloudtail, as a character, is either all in or all out; he doesn't do things by halves. sure, he might make sarcastic comments, but he is dedicated. when he says he's going to help daisy make it in clan life, he means it, and he is devastated when it seems like she's gone for good. bringing her back is a huge moment for him, but it's also a huge wakeup call when he talks to daisy and realizes even she's noticed how upset brightheart is. when he comes back to camp with her and her kits, he sees it for himself, and is devastated all over again.

it takes some work to get back to how their relationship used to be, but cloudtail vows to brightheart that he won't make that mistake again. he puts in the effort every day, until their relationship is mended again.

for her part in all this, daisy came to the clan scared out of her mind. she believes wholeheartedly (and reasonably) that her kits would have been killed had she stayed in horseplace, and that smoky didn't care. at first she was just incredibly glad to have someone on her side, fighting for her and helping her. and eventually, she did start falling for cloudtail. it wasn't true love or anything, but she did really like him. however, she knows he has a mate already, and she can see the rift between them that cloudtail's protection of her is causing. this only adds to her fears about her kits' safety, and is part of the reason she leaves. when cloudtail comes to get her at horseplace, she tells him that she doesn't want to come between him and brightheart, and part of the reason she comes back is because she can tell that cloudtail won't let that happen anymore.
