STORM PREP TIPS

Hey guys! So there's been some really solid tips posts circulating to help people prepare for the big winter storm coming in this weekend. I have wanted to share them for my followers, but I'm in a small pickle: My tumblr has been strictly PG since its inception and said posts contain some swears. I want to help without breaking this standard.

SO, my solution is I will share links to the three big posts that have been crossing my dash! If you are worried about the bad weather and want to be prepared, here are three great posts (some with multiple contributors) that can help you prepare and get through it safely!

What do I do if caught outside in high wind/tornado?

1. DO NOT PARK UNDER AN OVERPASS/BRIDGE !! Wind turns into a vacuum in those and you will be sucked out and likely injured.

2. DO NOT park sideways into the wind, especially if you have a tall vehicle. Point into the wind if you can. The likely hood of being tilted over is lower.

3. ABSOLUTELY LAY DOWN on low ground. IN a ditch is better if it isn't raining (please do not drown), but if there isn't one, lay flat with your head covered by your arms or anything else you have. You are much less likely to be hit by debris or picked up by a cyclone.

4. STAY PUT if in building like a big store or some place with a basement. Do NOT think you can make it home.

5. Tornadoes sound like freight trains. If you hear a train, brace yourself and hope. Keep in as small a ball/flat as you can with your head covered.

6. AT NIGHT, TORNADOES ARE ONLY VISIBLE DURING LIGHTNING OR THE DESTRUCTION OF POWER LINES. Do not look for it. Get in your safe place and fucking stay there.

As some of my UK and USA friends are experiencing a lot of Cold Wet White Stuff falling out of the sky rather heavily right now (I'm in the North of Scotland send help) this is your reminder to Penguin Walk!

If you didn't grow up anywhere prone to snow, or your parents didn't teach you- turn your toes outwards a bit, place your feet flat with each step, and shift your weight so it's above each step! This will decrease your chances of slipping and allow you to move around quicker once you get the hang of it.

Will you look slightly daft? Yes. But not as daft as falling on your arse in the middle of the high street. Walk like a penguin!

When rain appears over Lubbock, the streets become pools. This 1974 map collection depicts several flood hazard areas around town. The images here contain the areas around Texas Tech, so you will know which streets you may want to avoid as we trek into the cold, rainy months ahead.
