Interview with Jose F. Mojica, Creator of "Jeff & Taylor"
Howdy folks! Oh boy, do we really have a treat for you today! We recently had the great honor of interviewing Jose F. Mojica, the creator, writer and illustrator of the comic series "Jeff & Taylor".
"Jeff & Taylor" follows the lighthearted, slightly surreal, and occasionally supernatural adventures of two best friends and the fun, silly, and crazy people they meet along the way. Mojica first created J&T when he was only 11 years old, and he started publishing it online in 2012. Since then, J&T has been going strong and it is released regularly as a series of "Episodes" (50-page issues with a continuous storyline) and "Quickies" (one-page strips). Check out "Jeff & Taylor" on its official website!
In this interview, Mojica gives us a glimpse into his cool comic-creating world. Join us and see what makes this celebrated comic artist tick!
1. What are some of your influences? Are there any non-artistic influences that have had an impact on your work?
Jose F. Mojica,: I have a ton of influences! Gosho Aoyma, the creator of Detective Conan (AKA Case Closed) inspired me to make comics. Many of my ideas for my stories and characters came from watching different movies, TV shows, books, and especially music! My biggest influences came from personal experiences and I put my them in J&T stories for the sake of character development. My problems become theirs! Haha!
2. Secondly, besides "Jeff and Taylor", do you have any other projects that you work on or would like to work on?
I'm planning on an action/adventure comic series called "Project JA" (unofficial title) where it's an homage to the Final Fantasy video games. I also have a mystery thriller called "Malice Mansion"; a high school comedy, "School Spirit"; and an action horror, " Demon City".
3. What types of materials do you use to draw your comics?
When I make my comics traditionally, I'd use pencils, inking pens, and Primacolor and Copic markers. And for my digital comics, I use Photoshop with a Wacom Cintiq 22" HD.
4. I noticed a lot of buildings in "Jeff and Taylor" have strange and unique designs is there a reason or inspiration for this? Do you have a particular favorite moment in all of J&T that sticks out in your mind?
Haha! Yeah, I have fun with my buildings. I mean, David's house is shaped like a Scope bottle. One of my favorite moments in J&T so far is in Episode 3 where the boys cheer up Bloo near the end. She goes through a self-pitying mood and feels better when Jeff and Taylor tell her that they'd be her friends forever. It's a very heart warming moment. 5. Do you prefer the Quickies or the full length episodes?
I prefer the full-length episodes. I like to tell long stories with great characters and plot twists. That's the way I do things. The quickies can be fun, but I'm bad at making jokes! Haha!
6. Now you've been drawing Jeff and Taylor for quite a few years now, do you feel anything has changed in how you approach the series in the years since you first created them?
Yeah, It HAS changed. Well when I first created Jeff & Taylor, it was supposed to be a surreal rated 16+ comedy comic with a bunch of strange characters, villains, creatures. Characters got brutally killed and brought back it another episode without a scratch. Haha! Now, as I'm more mature, the series is more light-hearted, targeted to 12+ year olds, focused on character development and a big arching story. I want J&T to be real as possible on an emotional level, but still have some of that surreal humor that the boys encounter. 7. You've said that you'd like to see Jeff and Taylor in animated form. Do you have any ideas on who you'd like to voice the characters?
I sure do! Haha! Well, I have a few voices in mind: For Jeff, I would like David Kaufman (Danny Phantom) to voice him. For Taylor it would have to be Matt Hill (Captain N). For Cindy, Colleen Clinkenbeard (various Anime voices). Those are the voices I REALLY want for my characters. The rest can be whomever. 8. Feel free not to do this, but can you draw a quick sketch of any of the characters from "Oh Mercy MiMi"? 'Cause that would be totally rad!
Sure! I'll draw your character sometime this Summer! 9. And I have to ask since this blog has a lot to to do with them...what are your thoughts on mermaids? Mermaids? I think they're okay. Some can be beautiful and some not so beautiful. But overall I have no problem with them as long as they don't sing around me.
10. Do you prefer physical versions of comics or do you enjoy digital comics more? Or do you just not have a preference?
Well, I honestly like like a physical hard copy of a comic in my hands. It's easier on your eyes plus, you don't need electricity to read it! 11. What does the future have in store for Jeff and Taylor and your work in general?
Just prepare for even better art, stories, new characters, and adventures!
12. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions Jeff! Is there anything else you'd like to say to your fans?
No problem! I love interviews! I'm just sorry I didn't answer these questions sooner due to my schedule...But hey, I love my fans. All 499 of you! Thank you for supporting the comic, and if you're a newcomer reading this you can read Jeff & Taylor at jeffandtaylorcomic.com
I thank you John and Sarah for giving me an opportunity for an interview and I wish you luck on your comics! JFM out!
Thanks again to Jose F. Mojica for letting us interview him! It was a lot of fun and and very helpful to us! We wish him the best of luck as well on all his endeavors!
