Mini Girl 05 by Jessica So Ren Tang. 2018.
Born in San Francisco, California, Jessica So Ren Tang is a Chinese-American artist that infuses her diasporic identity into her work. Tang utilises embroidery as her medium of choice to explore its versatility, which parallels the fluidity of the Asian-American identity.
Mini Girl 05 - a work of hand embroidery on fabric - is part of Tang’s Girl Series. In her series, Tang replaces the facial identity of suggestively posed Asian women with Asian textile patterns. The patterned skin creates a broader spectrum of Asian identity - as identity moves between the liberal sexuality and traditional conservatism, it is rendered increasingly ambiguous and fluid.
