Tokyo Nights (TO:KY:OO) by Liam Wong. 2015-Present.
Liam Wong is an art director at video game company Ubisoft. Half Scottish and half Chinese, Wong was born in Scotland and is now based in Canada. Wong has been featured by Adobe, Canon, Saatchi, Smithsonian, and Forbes 30 Under 30.
Primarily an expert in graphic design, Wong did not venture into photography until visiting Tokyo for a Far Cry 4 press tour. Wong’s signature photogrphy was born when he bought his first DLSR camera and paid a second visit to the city of Tokyo, his primary muse. Walking around the city at night, Wong channels popular film noir and cyberpunk imagination into finding perfect shots that have earned him a large internet following over the years. Utilizing his primary skills in graphic design, Wong reanimates photographs and creates GIFs, cinemagraphs, and timelapses in After Effects and Photoshop. According to an interview, it’s Wong’s video game background that drives him to focus on post-production more heavily than the average photographer.

Aku Akan Bertahan/I Will Survive by Ming Wong. Brisbane, Australia. 2015.
Ming Wong is a Singaporean artist who lives and works in Berlin, Germany. He works with cinema and popular culture to dissect how the idea of culture and gender is constructed and reproduced. The questions of identity, gender, as well as the modes and myths of queer representation remain critical to Wong’s filmic practice.
For Aku Akan Bertahan/I Will Survive, Wong set himself the task of interpreting Australian cinema - Picnic at Hanging Rock, Walkabout and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - in the landscape of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He invited three other artists - all of whom have a history of working with drag - to collaborate with him. During a 2-week residency in Yogyakarta, they learned a choreography that combines classical Javanese dance, Dangdut (Indonesian Pop) and hiphop. This was set to a new version of Gloria Gaynor’s anthem I Will Survive, devised with an Indonesian Street band of “Angklung” musicians improvising on their bamboo instruments. The result is a combination of Javanese decoration, drag queen kitsch and children’s television - blurring the lines of ethnic or national belongings, and between high and low culture.

Son of Saul (2015)
Son of Saul (2015) är en bonus till denna lista som jag av en händelse såg fredag kväll. Detta ungerska drama skildrar en arbetsfånge i Auschwitz vars liv är skonat så länge det finns jobb att utföra i lägrets stora brännugn... När han en dag får syn på liket efter hans egen son som ska kremeras beslutar han sig för att göra allt i sin makt för att istället ordna en jordfästning.
En stark och samtidigt öppen och tolkningsbar skildring som nästan är helt dialoglös. Många tankar for genom mitt huvud om vad som försiggår i Sauls huvud under filmens gång. Om det verkligen är hans son, eller om han snarare projicerar saker på denna döde pojkkropp.
Hela filmen är princip filmad med grunt skärpedjup, med kameran fokuserad på Sauls ansikte, och omgivningen mer eller mindre oskarp. Det skapar en subjektiv, taktil och unik upplevelse för mig som tittare. Allt fokus ligger på bilden i denna film, och det är då filmmediet fungerar som bäst enligt min åsikt.
