This is supposed to be a Saturday post..
Sorry for the late post, weekends tend to be crazy busy so I may forget to post from time to time. I wanted to bring up a topic I hope you are all focusing on during this sweaty time of the year, water consumption. It has been brutal out but we are proud that you all make it in everyday for a good sweat, with that being said I hope that you are all taking a look at your water consumption and making sure you are meeting your body's needs so that you don't do any damage. I know I am one to talk, always having a coffee in my hand, so I have decided to make a public goal: For the next two weeks I will drink nothing but water. No coffee, no tea, no juice, no beer, no wine. All H2O all day. Let me throw some knowledge your way.. water affects everything in your body. (All of these facts are brought to your courtesy of foodmatters.com, webmd.com, and random nerdyness through college courses)
Cognition: dehydration severely affects brain function/cognition. 15-20% of your body's blood supply goes directly to the brain, most of which consists of the wet stuff.
Energy: Water supply is taken in by the cell membrane within our cells all the time. Through the power of osmosis voltage gradients are generated which are used to make ATP, which gives us the energy to kick CrossFit butt. Dehydration can stunt this process and even kill them.
Digestion: The acids in your stomach are some pretty serious stuff. The only thing that protects your stomach from this acid is a thin mucus that lines the walls of it. Cells within this mucus creates a solution that helps neutralize any acid that attempts to break through this lining. Without the necessary supply of water this barrier will begin to break down and ultimately lead to pain and erosion of your stomach wall.
I could ramble off a laundry list of reasons to drink water, but I think you get the picture. If you're interested in joining me for my two week H2O challenge let me know, we will get through it together. Now go drink some water!
