Mid-week Roundup

This week’s roundup is still prompt #5 due to my technical difficulties this weekend; thank you all for being understanding! And we have two new fics to highlight, so...

Waiting for Inej by Lynn_Forster Inej is sailing back to Ketterdam. Three short, small moments that portray her friends and her boyfriend, now reunited, while waiting for her.

The sharpshooter and his engineer on holiday by Sarai Jesper, Wylan, and Marya take a holiday to the Hendriks lake house. Things might be a little slow, but Jesper can't imagine a better companion than his brilliant, grease-streaked boyfriend. Wylan, however, would disagree. Jesper thinks his boyfriend is the best? Hah! He should see Wylan's boyfriend! He's got a smile brighter than sunshine. Jesper and Wylan are very happy, a little silly, and extremely in love.

Submissions are still open until Saturday night if anyone else wants to jump in, and the next prompt will be available on Sunday! This prompt is going to be a little different and I hope you all like it :)

Mid-week Roundup

This week’s roundup highlights three fics, including the tenth Weekly Grisha Prompts fic from @trassellynn! Thank you for all your fics and for bringing such bright Helnik energy!

Crows, Cats, and Lizards by Sarai The sleepover seemed like a good idea... several years into the happily ever after, the next generation of Crows gets into trouble at Wylan's house. Or maybe it was the cat's fault. Cats are wily creatures! Quote:  "Be seated, please, both of you,” from First Test by Tamora Pierce

And for Prompt #21...

The Train Job by Sarai Kaz has a plan. (Kaz always has a plan.) He'll need Inej's deadly silence and Jesper's wild energy. They're going to need a Heartrender and an explosives expert, too. Worst of all, they'll need luck on their side. The Crows are back from Ravka, but the havoc they've brought with them is more than they left behind. When Kaz Brekker decides to make a big, loud departure from the usual rules of keeping crime to the Barrel or keeping it quiet, he'd better know what he's doing or it'll be all of their necks.

Prompt #21 was initially meant to conclude on 7/10. I’d like to postpone that to 7/17, because next week is Wesper Week and I’m going to be focusing there. If anyone objects, please let me know and I’ll post a new prompt this Sunday!

Mid-Week Roundup

For this week’s roundup, we have five stories to highlight, coming from three writers!

First, from prompt #7: Write about a birthday coinciding with an event of international importance...

Happy Birthday to our queen by Lynn_Forster The Crows are in Fjerda, for the coronation of the new, good sovereigns, but, the same day, it's also Inej's birthday.

In the first chapter, a misadventure with the hotel happens: they're all assigned to the same room and, in a burst of pride, Kaz finds a way to make them all sleep on the same bed. In the second chapter, Inej's birthday party after the coronation.

One Last Time by Sarai When Kaz is in prison and approaching the end of a lengthy trial, Jesper pays him a long-overdue visit.

Prompt #8 was a stylistic challenge: a first-person fic from a non-narrator character, without using names. Both tagged the narrator, Anika for Heart of Dreg and Jordie for Glow.

Heart of Dreg by Lynn_Forster Five moments that show my headcanons about Nina and Anika's relationship and how young Dreg's feelings for the Grisha evolve and change during the story.

Glow by Sarai He lived. So I lived. And I watched. What else is there to do, after all, when the city wins, when it separates you from the person you love the most, but to watch your little brother grow up? Even if he seems to be growing into a baby crime lord, how can you let him go on alone?

Finally, there is already one fic for prompt #9:  Write about characters observing or celebrating a holiday!

Last Year by lizzycm When Inej was growing up, she spent New Year's Eve celebrating, enjoying family and fun and fireworks.

Now, New Year's is spent on a rooftop of an unfamiliar building, trying to figure out the best way to rob it. But at least she might still see some fireworks.

Midweek Round-up

Prompt #3 - an epistolary fic - already has one fic on AO3! Don’t Know How by Lizzycm Kaz and Inej exchange letters back and forth, as Inej travels the True Sea. But it's the things that go unwritten, the things that get crossed out, that make all the difference. A story told in letters.

Prompt #2 - You are the worst patient I have ever seen - has two fics from last week! 

An Escape... From His Own Flat by Lynn_Forster Set about two years after Crooked Kingdom. Kaz is recovering from a bullet wound, but he doesn't want to miss an important business meeting, so he comes up with a plan to evade his friends' surveillance. *** PROMPT: "You are the worst patient I have ever seen."

Houseguests and Fish by Sarai Wylan and Jesper are settling into their life together when a very bloody Kaz arrives in need of a medik and a safehouse. They can provide both. The true challenge is keeping Marya from realizing what a grumpy criminal mastermind's presence means about her son's past.

Prompt #3 is still open until Saturday for anyone still working on a fic! (Anyone like myself, who might have been procrastinating just a bit... ‘scuse me while I attempt to look responsible!)

Mid-Week Roundup

For this week’s roundup, we have three different fics from three different writers featuring three different couples!

First, last week’s prompt, horror, gave the fandom nightmares...

Bad Dreams by Lynn_Forster Wylan, Nina and Kaz are tormented by nightmares that follow the same scheme. Ghosts from their past are back to haunt their dreams, but, luckily, they're not alone.

Even a scary story has space for a love story by Sarai As Jesper and Wylan are settling into their life together, Wylan asks about the book Jesper's reading. Mostly, things are going well for the couple. But is it really a good idea to read a scary story before bed?

This week’s prompt, a package, stars, & bells ringing, has one fic so far... Breathe by Lizzycm When a job goes wrong, Inej finds herself having to make a difficult decision. Pre-SOC.

Mid-Week Roundup #1

We’re off to a great start so far with three fics posted to date for the very first Weekly Grisha Prompt! Kiss It Better by @zoya-inthesnow Softly, barely audible over the roll of the carriage wheels, Nikolai asks, "Where do you hurt, Zoya?"

Careful by @no-mourners-at-my-funeral Summary: Why did she even care? She told herself it was because her reputation relied on him. As long as Kaz Brekker was considered dangerous, his little spy would be feared as well. And fear was the surest form of respect. Without him, she could very well end up back where she started, or maybe somewhere worse. But it was more than that. She didn’t want him to die because… because…

Small Disasters for Little Crows by Sarai  Summary: 6-year-old Jesper borrows his ma's blouse. It's only a matter of time before chaos ensues. 10-year-old Matthias has a nice evening at home with his mamma and little sister. (will eventually be one fic for each fledgling!)

I wanted to highlight the fics that have been posted so far--for anyone who’s thinking about writing/posting but hasn’t yet, week 1 is still ongoing! And of course all fics are welcome in the AO3 collection. (I only linked to one fic on AO3 because the others are posted to Tumblr as well; if anyone would’ve preferred a link to AO3, let me know and I’ll amend it!)

To everyone who has written, liked, followed, reposted... thank you so much! I tried to be optimistic going into this but I was half convinced there would be no interest, and I’m so glad I was wrong!

Mid-week Roundup

This week’s roundup features three holiday fics from Prompt #9! A canon fic focuses on New Year’s Eve, while two modern AUs focus on Holi and Passover. This includes the first Weekly Grisha Prompts fic from @manikas-whims. Welcome to WGP, Manika!

Last Year by lizzycm When Inej was growing up, she spent New Year's Eve celebrating, enjoying family and fun and fireworks. Now, New Year's is spent on a rooftop of an unfamiliar building, trying to figure out the best way to rob it. But at least she might still see some fireworks.

Holi by Manika18 Modern AU Gang Lieutenant of the Dregs, Kaz Brekker lives by himself in his apartment. One morning his Indian neighbours' daughter Inej Ghafa shows up to share the customs of a festival they celebrate.

Next Year in Ketterdam by Sarai Passover has arrived! Wylan doesn't entirely understand the holiday, but looks forward to helping Genya and David host a seder--especially if it means latkes. Nina's and Jesper's families are invited, along with old friends and even someone new. It's time to read the Haggadah, find the afikomen, and pop an orange on the seder plate for this eclectic found family.

Mid-week Roundup

For this week’s roundup, we have two stories to highlight! Last week’s prompt was to use the fourth line of the sixth page of a book, so each fic has a different prompt.

A Parent’s Job by Lynn_Forster Since she and Kaz adopted two little kids, Inej has felt responsible for both her and Kaz's insecurities. One day, she finds out their oldest kid has a secret... PROMPT: "Turn the page: open a book at page six, the first sentence at the fourth line is your prompt" "Ah, my dear sister, how can I answer this question?" from "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. The Merman Has Tentacles by Sarai Jesper's getting used to his life on Geldstraat, but he likes to keep things interesting! Sometimes that means bringing home a new book. He's fairly certain Wylan will enjoy this one. It's fun, it's frivolous, and it's completely filthy. Jesper and Wylan laugh over a sailor/merman novel. PROMPT:  "Then they show you a bottle and you're confused about what it has to do with mermaid boat sex, but you still kind of want to know what it smells like?" from “The Beckoning Shadow” by Katharyn Blair
