Tfc, the O.C!AU

So I just decided to rewatch the show since I I was practically a kid when I first saw it. And the pilote so far is basically tfc.

Neil is caught in a car crash with his mom. his Mom's dead (or something) and Neil is just ... There. Lost. The attorney (surprise surprise) is Wymack. His bleeding heart aches seeing the lost look on the kid after he got him out (idk make a reason, i suck at laws) and he gives him his card. Asking him to call if he needed a place to stay.

Neil tries getting by the first few days but he's just stuck. He's got no idea where to go with no money, his mom is lost and the butcher is still after him. Nothing but the guy with tribal flame tattoos snaking out of his suit to call. So he does.

Wymack picks him up.

At the house, Neil is outside waiting for Wymack to tell his partner, Abby (idk if they're married). He is nervous, he contemplates running and takes a few steps out starting to do just that when he sees a short blond guy smoking. He wants just that, the cigarette (don't get ahead of yourselves). so he asks for one and it starts from there.

Kevin is living with Wymack at this point and he and Neil will have time to be friends and Exy junkies together.

(idk where the rest fits so far, it's just half the pilote. And it's around the time when canon actually happened 2003 for the oc.)

I am very aware that fictional media necessarily compresses timeframes in order to move the narrative along. But also, my friends, trauma is a slow beast to overcome.

For me, it took three years for the heart-in-the-throat sick feeling to fade from constancy. Five years before I could consider that maybe I was not at fault for what happened to me. I am still battling with one specific instance. The longterm ingrained mechanisms of fear and survival are ones I struggle with, am struggling with, and will struggle with for a long time.

Character development is quick and slow all at once, especially in stressful, dire, take-you-right-back-there situations.

So it’s probably not super realistic to expect all of your favorite/least favorite/generally-uninterested-in characters can ALL act like “””normal rational people”““ in the space of a few weeks/months.
