if you’d like another small writing prompt, what about something else with Wars and Legend? I love their dynamic a ton- maybe something where they’re the only one the other will let close to help with something. you can do this! get your stuff DONE! :D
Warriors' day had started off well enough. A nice made-to-order coffee warm in his hand, the chill of autumn mornings waking him up just as well, and a relatively empty ED to start the shift.
But something was off.
The report from the night shift charge nurse was not a promising one. Although his day was beginning beautifully, the night crew had been through it. They'd had two codes, one of which had been a child, as well as several abuse cases of varying ages, a combative family member, and sluggish bed assignments clogging up the flow. It was honestly a testament to the entire crew that the ED was as calm as it was at the start of day shift.
Warriors tried to find Legend briefly in the chaos of shift change, but there really wasn't time. He sent a text to his friend to check in on him and worked on handing out team assignments. After doing his daily checks, he glanced at his phone to see no response from Legend. He wasn't entirely surprised, but he did worry about him.
Sighing, he did a lap around the unit, and noticed something.
Legend's water bottle was still at the nurse's station.
Seeing Legend's things strewn across the ED was not really a new occurrence. Ravio, Legend's roommate, often sold off Legend's things, much to the nurse's annoyance. However, despite Ravio's bad tendencies, the man had never sold anything that Legend had really treasured, nor anything truly valuable. Pens, notepads, pins of no consequence were Ravio's typical wares. So this water bottle was not something he would have snatched.
Which meant Legend left it. Which he hardly ever did.
Warriors wrote it off. It had certainly been a long night. He grabbed the water bottle and took it back to the charge nurse area so he could return it to his friend later. Or, really, he should probably just pop it in Legend's locker. He was back tonight, wasn't he?
Checking to make sure nothing was going on in the department, Warriors took a moment to head to the locker room.
And found Legend sitting in there.
"Hey," Warriors said, a little caught off guard. "You--why are you still here?"
"Just needed a minute," Legend noted dully.
"It's almost nine in the morning," Warriors pointed out. "Your shift ended a while ago, Ledge."
Legend sighed.
When the charge nurse got no other response, he took a small step towards him. "You good?"
"Yeah," Legend answered automatically.
There was an awkward silence, and Warriors tried to respect that Legend probably needed some space. "Okay. I'll be around if you need me."
Legend grunted in acknowledgement, and that was that.
Until Wild popped by later, asking, "Hey, you know Ledge is still here, right?"
Warriors glanced at him. "Still?"
"Yeah. I tried talking to him, but he won't listen, says he's fine and just needs a bit. He's starting to get snippy. Time tried talking to him too. And Twi."
Twilight. That was how everyone else knew. He'd been floated to the ED.
Warriors sighed. "I'll check on him."
He got distracted by a nurse asking for advice on an operational matter, but he eventually made his way back to the locker room.
Legend was exactly where he'd left him.
Warriors didn't speak at first. Instead, he just slowly walked to the bench, sitting beside Legend.
There really wasn't a way to address what his friend had dealt with last night. So instead, Warriors just pointed out the obvious. "You need sleep."
He was sure the others had said something similar. Or perhaps they'd focused on why Legend was still here. The prickly travel nurse wouldn't want to talk about it.
Legend bit the inside of his cheek, nodding slowly, eyes distant.
"You're gonna be a shitty nurse to your patients if you don't leave," Warriors continued.
Legend huffed at that, finally squeezing his eyes closed, pinching his nose and tilting his head to the ground. His shoulders shook briefly, and Warriors carefully put a hand on his back.
"Go home, Ledge," Warriors said gently. "Get away from this hell hole."
Legend sniffled, biting his lips and nodding and scraping his face abruptly, letting out a loud breath to center himself. He glanced at Warriors, eyes red, and then looked away.
"Drinks later?" Warriors asked.
This finally got a genuine reaction from his friend, who gave him a sour expression. "You drink enough, moron."
"Hey, I had to ask," Warriors shrugged with a smirk. "You gonna be good to get home?"
Legend sighed, standing and wobbling a little on his feet after sitting for so long. Warriors slowly stood as well, a cautious hand hovering behind the younger man's back.
"I'll be fine," Legend finally said.
Warriors nodded. "I know you will."
His words caught Legend's attention, a statement that denoted confidence in his ability to cope, a reassurance that he'd be there if there was any need. It was a different statement of care and love than the others, whose worry was far more apparent.
Legend smiled, small and tired, but there. "See you later, friend."
Warriors watched him drag his feet out of the locker room, heart aching, before he started to worry about the department again. "See you later."
