Learning the Truth about the Prince- Bannerfall SMP Fanfic
To those watching Bannerfall SMP, you may know what happened to the blue allay, or at least know what became of him. I can't wait to see what will happen once the truth is revealed.
With that, I couldn't help but imagine how Apo and Cherri would find out and had to write an idea down before it all goes down.
Major spoilers about this story arc within this fanfic. I also give a trigger warning of violence with a brief mention of blood.
Learning the Truth about the Prince
It had been a few days since Cherri and Apo had told Katie that the Prince was dead. With a tremble in her voice, Katie accepted the news with great sadness and was welcomed into the search to find who had worked with the Frogue. She was surprised that her tremble didn’t give her away.
Images of the Prince's death awoke Katie every night since then. The sound of the little innocent child begging for life rang in her ears. With panted breath, she kept trying to convince herself that was doing her duty. It wasn’t her fault. She had sworn an oath to obey the Crown no matter the command.
He stood against peace. That's why he had to die. The kingdoms’ custody arrangement of him created an unneeded rift. Cherri did say it was sorted. She was the previous monarch. She was the one who knighted her. Then why, Katie wondered, didn't she trust the Princess on this? It hadn’t even been an hour since Cherri's abdication when the prince was slayed by her hands. By Katie the Brave’s hands.
The Brave. Katie scoffed at her title. There was nothing brave about killing a child. There was nothing brave about keeping it a secret.
Cherri and Apo were going to find out eventually. She had hoped she'd be the one to tell them. Their friendship was owed that. She wished she had gotten the chance before she was commanded to not speak of this to anyone. Well, except Kitty.
Thank the Gods Kitty had been there to confess to before she was commanded to stay silent. Without Kitty, Katie didn't know how she could have kept her anxiety to herself. Kitty was a true friend who protected Katie especially when he was questioned by Cherri on the bridge.
A true friend. One that Katie should have been for Cherri and Apo. On the day of Katie's knighting ceremony, Cherri showed a vulnerable side which led to the trio to form a bond. In a world filled with titles, their oath of friendship should have placed them all on an equal level. But, ultimately, there were oaths that overshadowed that. Katie’s duty to the Crown being one of them.
Apo was sworn by an oath to protect Cherri. It was an oath that overrode their fidelity to the Red Kingdom and perhaps their oath of friendship. Katie wasn’t scared to admit that she was afraid of Apo's wrath. She knew that wrath would befall her once Apo learned the truth. Hearing Apo's threat in the area to the Slime secured that.
Her fear of Apo’s wrath was nothing over the fear she had facing Cherri. How hurt Cherri would be from this betrayal. Cherri will never forgive Katie's actions no matter how much Katie hoped she would understand. Even if she didn’t understand, Katie hoped more than anything that Cherri wouldn't hold this against the Red Kingdom. It was just her and the Frogue at fault.
After yet another sleepless night, Katie asked for Cherri and Apo to meet her. Apo requested to meet at the greenhouse and despite her apprehension, Katie agreed.
She was the first to arrive which allowed time for her anxieties to surface. The surroundings of the greenhouse were overwhelming. She took in every facet of the greenhouse. The smells of the dandelions and rose bushes. There were still echoes of laughter that haunted the space accompanying the three chairs and table that remained from the tea party. It was an area rebuilt off of their friendship. Katie wondered what this building would mean to Cherri and Apo after today. Would they destroy it or leave it in neglect?
Cherri and Apo arrived moments after Katie. Cherri smiled as she warmly greeted Katie. Apo broke through her stoic demeanour to give an affectionate greeting.
'You wanted to speak with us?' Asked Cherri.
'Uh yes. It's about the Prince.' Katie took a deep breath. Right, you’re going to have to say this one way or another. 'I know who killed him.'
Cherri's eyes widened. 'Who?'
Katie bowed her head. ‘I can't say.'
Apo's eyes furrowed. 'Why not?'
'I've been sworn to secrecy.'
'So you brought us here to tell us you know who killed my son but can't tell us who?' Asked Cherri
'Well not exactly.'
'Who did you swear this secret to?' Apo asked.
'I swore an oath to the monarch.’
‘You’re suddenly loyal to the Frogue?’ Apo interrogated.
‘My loyalty is to the Crown and my oath as a knight must obey that. However, you both deserve to know the truth. So I asked to meet because I have an idea of how you can find out without me telling you.'
They both looked at her.
'I know it's ridiculous but trust me.'
'What's the plan?' said Cherri
'In a moment I will find the Frogue and ask for a chat at the throne room. I need you both to hide close by within ear shot. If all goes to plan, I should be there within five minutes. I will chat to him about the Prince and who killed him. Then, once I've spoken with him, I will meet you on the castle roof.
In order for you to find out everything, you must promise me that you must not make yourself known no matter what you hear.' She looked at Apo. 'It's important that you remain silent.'
'I will.' Cherri agreed.
Apo looked at Cherri before looking at Katie. 'You have my word.'
Cherri and Apo left before Katie searched for the Frogue. Soon Cherri and Apo knew the truth, the better.
Katie found the Frogue already in the throne room with the Necromancer, Sausage and the Short King/Mage, Cam playing a game of Farkle. They all said hello and Katie checked in on the game. Thankfully for Katie, their game was nearing the end.
With Sausage taking the win, they began packing away their dice. Katie took this as an opportunity to speak.
'May I have a private word with you, your Majesty?'
The Frogue looked at Sausage and Cam. 'May we have a moment?' They both bowed, said their goodbyes, and left.
'So,' the Frogue asked, 'what is this about?'
Katie looked at the Frogue wearing his borrowed crown. His eyes were as off putting as his current reign. She forced herself to look at them with the same trepidation she felt towards her mission to get rid of the Prince.
'It's about the child.’ Katie said, 'The Princess and her Knight have information that claims that you ordered his demise.'
'I see. Do you know where they got this information?'
'Apparently the Flower Mage got wind of this and let them know.'
'And they trust that?'
'They seem to.'
'Okay.’ The Frogue pondered, ‘We can work with that. The Blue Kingdom and its inhabitants shouldn't be trusted anyway. So when they do speak with me, I can reassure them that I did everything I could to find the child. If they accuse me, I will question why the Blue Kingdom would want to pin it on me.
Was anything else mentioned?’
‘They were apparently told that you ordered someone to get rid of him.’ Katie took a deep breath. 'They don't know that I was the one who killed him but I don't doubt that they will find out eventually.' Please don't react Cherri and Apo, Katie prayed. Please stay silent.
‘Why do you think they will find out? Are they starting to suspect you?’
‘No. The Princess and her Knight have suspicions on the Necromancer, but I don't think they will continue with their investigation on him without any leads. Pretty soon, their suspicions will be directed to me.’
‘Well let's keep any suspicions of anyone from the Red Kingdom away.' The Frogue paused in thought. 'They know the child is dead. Although they have no proof of his death, there's no use creating false hope. I can talk to them this evening to say that word has come in that the child is dead at the fault of the Blue Kingdom.'
'I suppose that could ease suspicions of you. But they will not believe that the Blue Kingdom would have done it maliciously.'
'Then I'll say that in the process of their kidnapping mission, there was an accident in the Blue Kingdom which caused the child’s demise. If they mention any theories about me, I will argue that the people spreading that rumor are lying to protect themselves. It's the Blue Kingdom. The Blue Kingdom always lies.’
‘That's true.’ Katie's deceptive agreement seemed to satisfy the Frogue.
‘You must continue to remain silent on the matter.’
'I will.'
The Frogue got off from his seat. 'Very good. I'm going to the Frogotten Kingdom to continue with the Fark Hall. Care to join me?'
'I will in a while. I just need to repair my gear.'
'Very well. I will see you afterwards.'
Once the Frogue left, Katie made her way to the castle roof.
Once again, Katie was the first to arrive. This short wait for the Princess and her Knight made the seconds feel like hours. Once she saw Cherri and Apo, it would confirm that they finally knew the truth. Katie felt calm as a cold breeze passed her face. What fate had in store for her now, she would welcome.
Just as Katie wondered if they would ever arrive, she saw Cherri approach the roof with Apo by her side. Apo taught the eye of Katie with a look of detest. Cherri remained looking down as she approached Katie.
Once she was in front of Katie, Cherri flew onto her and began hitting her. 'How could you? How could you kill my child? You were my friend.'
'That's enough.' Apo said, pulling Cherri away. She looked at Katie. 'She's not worth it.'
'I deserved that,' Katie said, wiping the blood from her mouth. She bowed her head, 'I am so sorry for what I did.'
'But why?' Cherri cried.
'The Frogue gave me the order. I had to follow the command. It’s my oath to serve the Crown, remember? Even if I disagreed.'
'Your oath was to protect the innocent. He was an innocent!'
'He wouldn't have been.’ Katie tried to explain. ‘His life caused a great divide.'
'That I sorted!'
'And how long would that have lasted?'
‘Do you truly believe that?' Apo asked. 'Or just the Frogue?’
'It doesn't matter what I think. I am a knight who must follow their oath.'
'Breaking one's oath can be justified if the action commanded isn't,’ said Apo. ‘Killing an innocent isn't justified.'
Katie could have been swallowed up in the silence that followed. Those words that came from Apo rang true as Katie thought of her brother. He had broken his oath in order to protect someone. And he still remained a knight.
‘You’re right.’ She bowed. 'I accept whatever punishment you have in store for me.'
Cherri shook her head, 'We'll deal with you later. We must deal with the Frogue before we come back to you.' She turned and walked away before looking at her again. ‘You may want to clean yourself up before you see him. I’m sure he has many more commands for you.’
Before Apo could follow, they looked at Katie, 'My friend, Katie the Brave, died that day.' she said calmly. 'All I see standing before me is Katie the Coward’. She turned around to catch up to her Princess.
