Can we PLEASE talk about how hot war for cybertron jetfire is LIIIKE... holy fuck every time he comes on screen so do I. He's so nice and pretty and badass and smart and biggg unnghh... he'd be so gentle with it at first, careful, because he's so damn big and he doesn't want to hurt his partner obviously!!! But I just know that mech can and will go FERAL. He's into predator/prey bc I say so
Hopefully this hasn't been constantly repeated as I am nearly 5 years late, but I have to say: Jetfire's characterization in Netflix's War For Cybertron seems very strange and indecisive.
And, maybe it's because I watched G1 first, but the way he cuts off Starscream's arm in the FIRST episode is staggering 😂 Then Jetfire antagonizes him for the entirety of their interactions, in addition to having "blind loyalty" (quoted) to Megatron and being very focused on factions rather than the individual. Then, episodes later, he feels empathy for a prisoner being tortured/killed and shows repulsion toward death and genocide. Then, later in the same season, he feels nothing after killing off several seekers/soldiers (including Skywarp)? It seemed like the writers were going back and forth between how his character was in G1 versus how badass of a warrior they wanted him to be.
His saber weapon and missile attack are super cool, and could have been connected with a science background somehow. I also found him being the leader of the seekers at the beginning to be intriguing, and I believe that dynamic could have stayed even if his original personality and background as a scientist was implemented. I also agree with him having backbone and the ability to fight, but I disagree with taking away his far-reaching empathy and scientific inquiry to appeal to the homogenizing "angsty war aesthetic."
Jetfire's design and abilities are great, and I'll say that for the majority if not all of the WFC characters too. But, the compassionate scientist part that differentiated him from the rest of the soldiers was muted. He was mostly given a rugged fighter personality (with randomly occurring empathy). Which is okay, but takes away the complexity of him as a soldier, IMO.
Though, I am also a SUCKER for physically and relatively BIG characters being soft/non-violent so maybe I did take the change personally (joke). WFC Jetfire is basically the Snyder Superman of Jetfires (also a joke). And, I'll admit to having some bias against pushing the idea of aggression onto bigger characters or pliancy onto smaller characters, as it can be overdone.
And, to give credit where it's due, Jetfire is shown to be knowledgable (as shown with knowing about Praxian history when bringing it up to Prowl in S01E06). But, I was hoping at one point for him to show more of his scientific side with Wheeljack or maybe to eventually crumble with guilt when left alone.
Neither happen, which is fine, but if there's already emphasis on how he's a rugged warrior who wants to keep Decepticons imprisoned, it's going to confuse the audience when he suddenly feels deeply in one scene, switches to the Autobot side, then feels nothing or is exceedingly unsentimental/pragmatic for the rest. His values seem to fluctuate often without any notable catalyst. I wasn't surprised to find that he later ends up as one of the background deaths on Elita-1's team, because it would be difficult to make his death profound.
His arguments/conflicts with the seekers and his own Earthrise Autobot group were left unresolved (ex. Starscream's feelings about his treatment and Skywarp's death, then Elita-1's feelings about the imprisoned Decepticons). However, to cope, I've reasoned that the lack of closure was a rhetorical decision to take emphasis away from him and place it on Elita instead, with her death needing to resonate and land perfectly for the finale.
So, it's fine to like his WFC version. It isn't wrong to like both G1 Skyfire and WFC Jetfire either, if anyone feels otherwise from this post LOL. (Same with how someone can like both Gunn and Snyder's Superman, it's up to preference.) I actually didn't mind WFC 😭 It isn't bad, and the animation, pacing, and story is digestible. The tragic Oplita is solid. And, I understand the "cool factor" of mean Jetfire, I just found it to be executed strangely and prefer the science weenie version of him.
