Assignment 2 Presentation Reflection

On Tuesday, the presentation took place in the studio, with a five-minute presentation that summarised the work over the previous three weeks.

Reflection

Overall, the presentation was satisfactory. I made the most of the slides and scripts by planning how I would explain the current project status and vision, as well as my ideas and direction.

However, because I was unfamiliar with the presentation, I was reading a script. Midway through, I was able to interact with the audience. As a result, I will devote more time to preparing for and practising the presentation without a script in the final project presentation.

Evaluation

Project process 3/5 - Compared to other designers, I realized that the foundation of ideas is weak and my current process is not fast.

Time management 5/5 - Assignment 2 has been completed within the time limit, and I was proceeding to the registered place of the timeline.

Project result 4/5 - I'm satisfied with the presentation slides and scripts, and I think I've done my best.

Next Plan

This week is the beginning of the Te Rapunga(; initiation) phase, and I aim to start designing ideas after in-depth research and analyses.

Description

I worked on the presentation this weekend as the last work of the Whakariterite phase and assignment 2.

First, I gathered the components and explanations for each slide and the essential image data. Furthermore, I organised what to give on each slide and the relationships and associations of the pages.

Reflection

Assignment 2 is refining my design proposal from Des300, focusing on the design process, methods, tools, and weekly planning that outlines self-prescribed major and minor milestones alongside weekly deliverables/tasks that incrementally progress to towards my final project and presentation (Assignment 3). Throughout three weeks progress, I decided my design methodology, toolkits and plan my capstone project. Also, I found my project vision.

Evaluation

Project process 5/5 - Overall, the project is proceeding as expected.

Time management 5/5 - Work within the time constraints and submit the assignment on time.

Project result 4/5 - I'm not happy with the design of the presentation slides. However, given the time limitations, I believe I achieved the best results.

Next Plan

I'll begin actively thinking about the project next week and start ideation. I will perform additional research on project vision and use the 'We Saw, We Head' tools to study from the perspectives of multiple personas.

Description

I focused on assignment 2's final requirement, Preliminary research. The study was divided into two sections. Firstly, I researched abroad, or New Zealand plans similar to the initiatives I am currently doing or relevant to food safety. Second, I created a mood board based on my project's colour scheme and elements.

Precedent projects: After completing the Precedent project research, I completed a material investigation that is most close to my project idea.

Mood boards: I researched the project's colour theme and design aspects through the mood board.

Discovery summary used the Learning card tool from 'The Collective Action Toolkit' to summarize the project progress over the past three weeks. It was an opportunity to learn again what I did in the past three weeks while reflecting on what I did and what I found in the work.

Reflection

This week, I caught up on lost work and organised assignment 2. It was good to be able to reflect on the lack of previous results and work again. However, I believe that there is an additional opportunity for improvement in the preliminary research. In particular, I will thoroughly research the 'food safety toolkit' of the Ministry of Primary Industries, which was most similar to the toolkit I was preparing as a project.

Evaluation

Project process 4/5 - The project's direction has been determined, and I completed a background study on the colour theme of the planned layout and the design I plan to utilise.

Time management 5/5 - I'm doing it according to the timeline.

Project result 4/5 - I think I need more preliminary research before proceeding with the project.

Description

I conducted a secondary research and created a mood board that may serve as the foundation for the third week's preliminary study. Secondary research dug deeper into the information covered in Design 300. The mood board includes images of food safety, toolkits, and visuals that reflect the project's atmosphere.

Reflection

The project's progress was slow, but I began to look into it.

Evaluation

Project process 4/5 - There has yet to be any significant improvement.

Time management 3/5 - The project could have been carried out more efficiently over the weekend.

Project result 3/5 - I should conduct further research on the colour theme or style of the toolkit on the mood board.

Description

Week 2's purpose is to comprehend the project's vision and identify the scope and limitations to achieve the goal. Furthermore, three sorts of plans are produced based on scope and limitation, ranging from ambitious plans to achievable plans.

I reconsidered and reflected on each other's 'how might we statement' with feedback partners during the studio session and turned them into a project vision.

Project Vision Cultivate a comprehensive understanding of food safety protocols within Aotearoa, thereby enabling individuals to demonstrate tino rangatira tanga, self-determination, assume responsibility, and exude confidence in their capacity to handle food appropriately.

Through the project vision, my biggest scope is to make all consumers across New Zealand are supported with comprehensive knowledge to efficiently protect and meticulously manage their personal food supplies, thereby managing their nutritional health.

I've created three plans depending on the Scope. The most ambitious plan is to simultaneously create a website with important information and development processes in the food safety toolkit so that toolkit users may access more information. On the other hand, achievable plans include the same toolkit, but they promote it with simple posters and make it easily available to individuals.

Following that, I reflected on the plans and assessed the risks and limitations that could result from them. The greatest risk, in my opinion, is technological risk. It's because I may have to utilise software I've never used before, and the programs may have issues. Therefore, I will always take time to complete the project.

Reflection

It's only the beginning of the second week, but I've already located my time wisely and used my studio time well. I could successfully classify the vision, scope, and limitations at the core of assignment 2. Based on this, I will reflect on myself and seek feedback from my partners and stream leaders in order to work on a solid foundation project.

Evaluation

Project process 5/5 - A clear project vision has been defined, and important ideas and plans for the project have been produced.

Time management 5/5 - In the stream studio, numerous project deliverables were completed in a short period of time.

Project result 4/5 - I haven't yet reflected on myself, and I believe I need to create my scope plans deeper.

Description

When working on a project for a limited period of time, methodology is vital. When I work alone, it helps me develop timelines and manage my time effectively.

My chosen methodology is the 'Hautū Waka framework' which is rooted in mātauranga Māori and can be used to help us navigate complexity. Hautū Waka has its roots in indigenous knowledge and its profound relevance to the inhabitants of Aotearoa.

Strengths: Hautū Waka framework provides streamlined access to projects, enabled by the availability of questionnaires tailored to each phase of the process. This structured approach not only simplifies project management but also enhances cultural understanding.

Weaknesses: The Hautū Waka framework requires a thorough understanding of mātauranga māori and indigenous culture. As a result, creating a timeline requires a significant amount of study and research. This will assist me in broadening my knowledge and perspective as a designer and understanding Aotearoa's culture and residents, which is the project's background.

Frog's 'The Collective Action Toolkit' is a valuable resource when engaging in collaborative design projects involving multiple team members. This is the key reason I choose this toolkit as an essential component of my project. Given the ethical limitations that prevent me from using outside information such as interviews or reflections, this method will allow me to generate varied opinions on my own, compare and contrast these viewpoints, and provide a project conclusion that is appealing to a broad audience.

Strengths: It is effective at comparing and getting opinions from various individuals. The benefit is that I can use whatever tool I choose independently of the timetable when I need multiple tools.

Weaknesses: It is a toolkit for teams and a tool that people engage. Even though this is a single project, I will utilise this section to carry out a project that contains a variety of perspectives and personas.

Reflection

The overall Miroboard progress is keeping up with the timeline. However, I will do further research into the technique and toolkit in order to generate a more detailed timeline than the one I have now. I will also look into actual use cases of toolkits used in each phase to avoid confusion as the project proceeds.

Evaluation

Project process 4/5 - Consequently, I am satisfied, although there needs to be more clarity in establishing and justifying the framework and toolkit. I believe this is due to a lack of understanding of assignment 2.

Time management 3/5 - This task took longer than I expected on the schedule. However, because this is the start of the project, I can still adjust the timeline.

Project result 5/5 - I am satisfied with the result of my work since my framework and toolkit are aligned with my previous works and I made great efforts on timeline management.

Description

The first week's goal is to set important Kawa(values) and Tikanga(reason) for carrying out the project, investigate the methodology and toolkit underlying the project's progress, and distribute them according to the timeline.

Among the four above, Manaakitanga and Ngā akoranga were selected as the most important Kawa, the focus values shared with project partners. I also wrote down the goals that I wanted to achieve through the project based on my values.

In addition, I opened a timeline in the form of a Gantt chart to start planning for the future project, and I selected six colour palettes that are colourful and can see the progress of the project at a glance.

Reflection

First of all, the big foundation of the project was laid because I could set the Kawa of the project and the reasons accordingly. Also, I think it was a good decision as a New Zealand student to choose Kawa, using Māori words to respect the indigenous culture along with the project partner.

However, I need to organise the Miroboard so everyone can visit it easily, and I also need a more detailed and clear timeline for further project progress.

Evaluation

Project process 3/5 - I need a timeline as soon as possible because I need to figure out the current progress.

Time management 5/5 - Completed within the time limit.

Project result 5/5 - Thanks to the timeline and colour palette, the Miroboard began to be managed. Also, I am satisfied with the progress made using the proper indigenous language.

Description

The Design 301 course consists of one capstone project. Starting this week, for three weeks, I will form a Miro board and timeline and start research on the basis of the project before I start full-scale project development.

For the first-week individual stream studio, I started the project by looking back on the information about the project partners I researched in the Design 300 course and the challenges I researched;

Insensitivity to food safety

Language diversity

Lack of information for Nuinga (people)

Furthermore, an in-depth study of project partners examined their strategies and important values. My project partner, Plant & Food Research has three main values;

Mana Tangata: We contribute our unique talents and perspectives

Manaakitanga: We show respect, generosity and care for others

Whai māramatanga: We always look for a better way

Reflection

It's the first week, and it was time to reflect on on the previous work, so there's not much to reflect on. However, I will re-read and clean up the task description page on Canvas because I still don't understand the project and assignment 2's detailed information yet.

Evaluation

; To evaluate myself while writing a blog, I will continue to focus on the project and not miss it by evaluating 3 criteria and briefly writing down the reasons for it.
