Honoring Gray Whale Migration - Coastal Stewardship Remains Strong in California
The crisp sunshine at the 8th Annual Monterey WhaleFest (which honors the gray whale migration) brought hundreds of California coastal stewards to my table on Old Fisherman's Wharf.
I was excited to talk to people of all ages about what whales need to be healthy, and how to protect our coastal environment in small, daily ways.
I offered an activity that included decorating a recycled magnet with a whale tail stamp, colorful sea creatures, and a personal coastal stewardship goal. A list of ideas was provided for inspiration, for example:
Bring a bag with you when you go to the store instead of accepting a paper or plastic bag.
Use both sides of the paper when writing or printing.
Use reusable containers and utensils for your lunch items and carry them in your own cloth bag or lunchbox.
Leave beaches, parks, and neighborhoods cleaner than you found them—pick up trash even if it's not yours.
...though many participants came up with their own ways to be ocean-smart.
Whales, whales... EVERYWHERE! #homerwhales #sitka #whalefest #TimeToDoYourChristmasShopping! #alaskalife (at Sitka WhaleFest)

Orca Aware's Founding Manager Sam Lipman interviewed John Hargrove at WhaleFest in Brighton, UK on Sunday 15th March 2015. John is a former senior orca trainer for SeaWorld, USA and former supervisor of orca training for Marineland Antibes, France, who has 14 years of experience working with captive orca over a 19 year period. John appeared in the 2013 documentary 'Blackfish' and has since gone on to support legislation in California and New York to end the practice of keeping orca in captivity. John's book 'Beneath the Surface: Killer whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish' is now available.
Gotta say from whale fest i’m even more anti captivity. I went to an event where I learnt so much and was given the ability to pass that information on through word of mouth, stickers, leaflets and website links.
Not just for captivity, but for pollution, litter, ghost gear environmental conservation...
I have never been to a marine park but I imagine they don’t offer that experience.
