Pumpin' Sumpin' . . .
El Segundo White Dog Wheat IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 3 of 4. Smells of some nice orange citrus and other tropical notes and some clear wheat presence. Relatively simple, and the body follows much the same way, although a touch of herbal and earthy hop qualities are there too. Pretty easy-drinking and nice dry finish, but doesn’t particularly stand out.
Meh
I’m not sold on the idea of NE IPA, but I do like the recent trend of adding wheat to everything. When I was coming up, wheat was not cool. Wheat beers were for summer barbecues and Bavarian cosplay only. But when added to a willowy IPA, a helping of wheat can fluff it up a little.
After devouring Lagunitas’ Doppel Weizen, I was excited to see Megawheat on the shelf. Stone, Odell, Marble -- these are respected names. I was expecting great things. What I got was a rehash of a tired double IPA with just a little more head on it. Whatever C-hops they used for bittering completely dominated the more delicate Motueka, Mosaic, and Mandarina Bavaria. And the sharp bitterness cut through any softness the wheat might have added. Megawheat was just mega-muddled.
Bell’s Official IPA on tap at Midlands in DC. A 3 of 4. A very easy-drinking wheat IPA that has quite a lot of the hop complexity you’d hope for. Tropical fruit and some almost white-wine-like notes are dominant up front, and a medium, creamy body carry it all well. Not overly bitter, but the finish is nice and dry. Quite good.
Modern Times Geodesic Wheat IPA on tap at the Modern Times Flavordome. A 3 of 4. Lots of hop complexity here but don’t taste much wheat behind it all. Still, an excellent IPA with a lot of tropical notes up front and a lingering resinous quality in the body. Filtered and light-bodied enough that it is quite drinkable.
Manayunk’s Fresh Hops of Bel Air (Picked up at a Weis in PA). A 3 of 4. A good standard pine/citrus profile for an IPA with some nice thickness to the body. The wheat presence is pretty subtle -- this is pretty aggressively bitter and sticky. I like this more and more as it warms -- some great complexity to the hops here.
frederik ale’nin wheat ipa’sını ilk defa gördüm. önceden var olsa görürdüm. bence yeniydi 🙈
neyse.
hafif içimi olan, içtikçe keyif veren bir buğday birasıydı.
LITTLE SUMPIN' / LAGUNITAS (San Diego, CA)
