yeah he absolutely had no business screaming at Piper like that when it's not her fault and he sure is sometimes awful to the warren without noticing it, but also imagine you know this boy since you were a kid and you fell in love with him and it was all going great until suddenly he tells your parents you two are a thing and now the whole very homophobic town knows you're gay and your parents are having a divorce and you have this big fight with him, break up with him and after a while you find out that he's GONE. like, poofed out of existence gone and there's this bunch of people wearing his skin and walking around and you try to like befriend them, after all they're the only ones who are nice to you and they are also the only remainder of the only person who has ever genuinely loved and cared about you for who you are but they are just so wildly different from that boy you loved and you are so fearful that he's just gone forever
ultimately I think what Kai needs to do in order to start treating the warren better is to let go of the notion that they are a remnant of Percy. yes they share the same body, they look the same, they mask as him for convenience in front of others, but they are not and will never be Percy. these are completely different animals, Kai.
though admitting that, to Kai, would mean admitting that Percy is just gone. that rabbit who was the only animal you could rely on? that rabbit who was the only animal to genuinely care about you? that rabbit who was the only animal that understood you? that rabbit who was the only one who was there for you amidst all the stuff you have to deal with in your life? gone. hey, here's all of these other animals you can befriend though! some of them are even queer as well! and they all look like him. and they all look exactly like him but he is gone forever. that is how things look like to Kai, and, yeah. it does sound confusing and scary when you look at it like that.
we know that the warren has nothing to do with Percy's disappearance and they most definitely did NOT choose to all look like the same rabbit all the time. we know the warren isn't Percy , they're completely different animals who happened to share the same body and now have to work together as a collective in order to manage stuff. but Kai doesn't see things as we do.
in short, Kai please go to therapy. like once you're able to. please. also, let go.
Love this essay!!! Yeah, Kai is.... poor guy. X'3 I'm honestly very happy that most of the readers are very sympathetic towards Kai. At the time of writing the script, I honestly thought most readers would be hard on him until later in the story.
