i’ve seen a lot of posts lately about how nonbinary people can also have binary identities (true!) and fit into binary sexualities (also true!) and how some nonbinary people date gay men/women and it doesn’t make their partners not gay (this is true as well!), but i think that by pushing this narrative so hard we ignore the fact that not all nonbinary people have binary identities, fit into binary sexualities, or could date a gay person without being misgendered. “nonbinary” is an umbrella term that describes a lot of identities, and even people who may share more specific identity terms may not have a lot in common with how they navigate gendered spaces. there isn’t some one-size-fits-all solution to gender essentialism, but equally at the same time, i’m not sure that fighting for nonbinary people to occupy binary spaces and be considered binary-lite is really the narrative we ought to be pushing, here.

#like... im not saying that nonbinary people who fit into binary spaces are invalid or shouldn't be respected #i'm also not saying that enbies should be treated as some kind of ''third gender'' bs and gatekept from those spaces #what i am saying is that we shouldn't make blanket statements about enbies in relation to binary spaces #and statements like 'gay/lesbian sexuality includes (all) nonbinary people! you don't have to be bi/pan to date enbies!'#while true #also ignores that some of us aren't comfortable being included in that #some nonbinary people WOULD feel misgendered and uncomfortable being in a relationship with someone who id'd solely as gay/lesbian #and acting like this isn't true #(or worse. acting like not wanting to be misgendered in a relationship makes enbies homophobic.)#gives cis people (cis PARTNERS) a pass to not question their sexualities and misgender their nonbinary partners #which isn't good #anyway exorsexism is bad and gender is complicated send tweet
