sometimes a bug lands in my drink and I say "bro is in my drink" which evolved into "there is a brother in my drink" but that feels vaguely assumptive so now I on occasion say "there is a sister in my drink" whenever a very confused fly decides to take a dip. you too can practice feminism in everyday life
is "asian" really a coherent identity when we're lumping in people from palestine and turkey with people from vietnam despite being geographically, linguistically, culturally far apart
This is a really interesting question! There's a lot of layers I can go into so hopefully I can try to address all of them in a way that doesn't seem overwhelming.
One of the goals on this blog is to normalize the "Asian" to be a descriptor inclusive of EVERY Asian, not just East Asians (or South Asians in the context of the UK). This is difficult to reverse because Asian has been a shorthand for a particular group of "visibly similar Asian people" (according to white people) for so long
However, when people use labels or heuristics, it's for the purpose of being a shortcut. It's a descriptor, and you're trying to say something about another person, culture, etc.
The function of saying Asian in that case means its broad functional value is essentially geographical. Notice how even in this post I'm grouping different Asians to groups we are probably more familiar with even though cultures vary greatly even within these groups (ex. East Asians, South Asians). I'm basically doing what this post describes. Even though one of the goals is for people to comprehend the vast diversity of Asian people, there is also a need for specificity. "The melting pot of cultures" is lazy because it erases the unique characteristics of each culture and haphazardly throws them in one container, which maintains the norm. These two ideas are kind of difficult to juggle at once
I would go as far as to say the Asian identity to some extent is fragmented, though not entirely. South Asians are not treated the same as Southeast Asians, who are not treated the same as Central or West Asians (some of who may not even identify as Asian). There is not the same sense of unity even though there are some broad brushstrokes applied to most of us like strict households or the model minority myth.
I say not entirely because the way history is taught in certain parts of the world fail to make students grasp how interconnected they all are. It wasn't like Ancient Mesopotamia -> Ancient Egypt -> Ancient India -> Ancient China -> Etc. in a linear fashion. They were all co-existing and influenced each other (like how the Silk Road was a massive mechanism for cultural exchange). Buddhism managed to spread from northern India to China (especially Tibet) and Southeast Asia. I believe the Mongol Army that invaded Vietnam in the 13th century even comprised of a lot of Turkic warriors. There are so many people from Central Asia who may resemble what we consider "the average East Asian person" but speak languages resembling Turkish. It would be disingenuous to completely erase that history because culture is constantly evolving.

only 62 more frogs until we hit 8,000 species described. the moment we've all been waiting for
there are an average of about 150 new amphibian species described per year so I remain hopeful that 2026 will be the year of 8,000 frogs
I do love that somebody tagged tumblr's own frog scientist on this post. chop chop dr scherz, we've got 62 more frogs to discover and you're the only frog scientist any of us knows
GUYS amphibian species of the world is still at 7,994 species of frog BUT amphibiaweb is at 8,008 species of frog, and do you know who is a co-author on the 8,000th species of frog there???? TUMBLR'S OWN FROG SCIENTIST DR SCHERZ

Black ppl deserve to feel safe and welcomed on the internet, on fandoms on whatever community or hobbies they want without having to deal with antiblack racist attacks, microaggressions or enablers of antiblackness . And if u genuinely consider urself to be left leaning or an ally or woke you should do and try to unlearn the colorism, texturism , eurocentrism and antiblackness
what do you mean I can't control everything, why not
