**Late last night i was blessed by the song of a whipporwill outside my window. A song I hadn’t heard in a long while. I imagine all the clear cutting around here has pushed them closer to me, which is sad in one way, but good in another.

That’s a song that really takes me back ♫ ♪

The Eastern whip-poor-will is a nocturnal bird that prefers habitats with open woodlands, scrubby areas, and fields, often found in mixed or deciduous forests. They are known for their distinctive call and primarily feed on insects, foraging at dusk and dawn.

ray, i am unwell. i was re-reading “Whippoorwill” because it’s finals season and i needed my heart to match the utter ruins of my psyche and “The Bomb” by Florence + The Machine came on. long story short, i’m now in my dorms kitchen downing grape outshine bars on 35 year old linoleum. did i fly a little too close to the sun? you bet. did i also find the soundtrack to one of the most heartbreaking things put to word? yes, and i gave myself an imaginary grammy as a consolation. just thought that i’d share because wowza, if that song didn’t just click onto the theme of that fic.

if i follow the call of the whippoorwill out from this burrow of blankets and slow breathing

over and into the shirt shrugged over sleepy shoulders

downstairs to the kettle snoring soft steam for the tea steeping in its yawning mug

out, out! past the screen door anointed in moth-kisses into a slowly waking world

will a blessing be out there, waiting?

whippoorwill, are you calling me to go stirring my spirit as I stir this golden tea

as the sun shrugs its golden shoulders over mountains?

whippoorwill, tell me, tell me how you’ll bless me! and you, dove with your mournful morning croon, you, creek with the laughter bubbling up from your valley nook below —

tell me how you’ll lavish me in blessings only lavished upon those who arise and go.

*i was sitting in the living room and lo and behold the whipporwill begins its night call so i stepped out to record him/her and i see someone’s cat running across the yard - it got quiet shortly afterward. i sure hope its not after my bird

like their call, surely it's such a dead on banger so they can lure us sweet lil boppers to our doom with ease!

I took this video around 5 AM at our rental cabin, just as we were getting ready to leave and return home last Wednesday.
