I love the ocean and I like teaching people about what I love so I’ve decided to do a “100 facts about the ocean” kind of thing. Basically, (hopefully) every day I’m going to post a new ocean fact. If you have any cool facts you want to share or want to know a cool fact about a particular animal send me an ask and let me know! Here’s fact number 1
Many of the white sand beaches are made up (at least partly) of fish poop. Parrotfish eat algae that grow on coral. Their beak-like teeth help them break off and eat small pieces of coral. then, they have another set of teeth, called pharyngeal teeth, at the back of their throats that grinds the coral into tiny pieces, which is then pooped out as white powdery sand. A single parrotfish and poop out hundreds of pounds of sand a year!
*I was going to post a picture of parrotfish teeth but I decided they were too creepy
