The six canvases in this exhibition have never been painted. The only things that happened to them were that they were produced, transported, purchased, signed, and hung on the gallery wall.
In one sense, these blank canvases exist in a state of readiness before becoming paintings. They are empty spaces filled with possibility. In another sense, the work questions the idea of the White Cube — a space designed to separate art from its surrounding context and give special status to the objects placed inside it. The empty white walls are not neutral. They carry the power to define value, turning objects into artworks and artworks into commodities.
Meaning may not come only from what we create. Sometimes it emerges when we stop and pay attention to what is already there.
