Both fandoms are at war with these two characters because of what they are doing and how they are doing it. People who support them are being attacked by others in the fandom because they are indirectly supporting ‘murdering the innocents’ tope. When they really don't.
Its a greek tragedy at its core. While one is a ‘hero’ and the other is ‘a villian’ both are making choices that are eventually their own flaw. Justice = Revenge. But what exactly is Justice? And what is the correct way to get Revenge?
There is no answer, because in the mindset that they have after everything they have went through, their justice is the right thing even if it means killing innocents people to get there. So we as the readers can understand and even feel their need for justice, even if it’s in an immoral way.
And I’m not justifying their actions. Murder is still murder. I can’t possible get in their heads to understand their thoughts, which is why these characters are complex in their morality and can’t be compared with one another, because both have different desires and storylines but their actions are somehow the same.
And no, I’m not opening a discussion on how these two characters are the same/different and should be respected/hated. No. So please, don’t start a war on this too.
But there is something to remember, and its that just because you support or even like these character doesn’t make you a bad person. And people saying that need to chill out because like, firing back at you:
...you like shingeki no kyojin, a story where humans are eaten and murdered graphically in every chapter so because you like it, it means you like and want people to die in such way everyday in real life *gasp* you disgust me, you horrible person!
What makes a healthy fandom is that we accept everyone’s thoughts, theories and even ships and we don’t throw hate at others for having a different opinion. It’s what makes these stories great, the fracture in social morality which is something that the previous chapters of both mangas have shown and established. There is no good side or bad side, there is just chaos and people doing what they can to get what they want, even if means acting on their own way of justice.
So please, don't throw hate at others for liking these characters. Enjoy the ride, ask them for their point of view, and just appreciate the genius minds that are Hajime Isayama and Kohei Horikoshi for giving us such an amazing story, complex characters included.
and if people are giving your trouble
