DUDE. YES. To this day, i believe that the main reason they aged up the marauders was because they cast alan rickman as snape. and then suddenly it was WELL FUCK. LET'S ROLL WITH IT. which was a big mistake. huge. uuuuuuuuugh.
IT’S TRUE! And I’m genuinely not sure it’s ever mentioned before Order of the Phoenix how young the Marauders were. Moody gives Harry that photo of the original Order -- and he’s like oh shit. But! That leads me to several other thoughts and feelings and questions that mostly boil down to DID YOU WRITE OUT YOUR TIMELINE, JK, WHAT IS THE TRUTH???
Because, ok, Hagrid tells Harry (when he’s just turned eleven) that Voldemort was in power twenty years ago. So, that means approximately ten years before Harry was born. Which, again, if my shaky math is right, then the Marauders spent basically their entire Hogwarts lives with Voldemort in power.
BUT THEN.
Fast forward back to OOTP and Hermione and Ron are named prefects. Harry and his teenage angst are all like would have been cool if I was a prefect, so while he’s grousing he’s also like “Hey, Sirius were you a prefect?” And Sirius laughs and tells him, of course not, James and I were in detention way too often, and then says that Remus was the prefect.
BUT THEN. AGAIN.
Hagrid told Harry that James and Lily were Head Boy and Girl while at Hogwarts and they were great at magic and never swayed by the Dark Side. So, stick with me here, but WHAT IF JAMES AND LILY BECAME HEAD BOY AND GIRL AS PART OF JOINING THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX??? Because they’d be of age (and Mr. Weasley tells Mrs. Weasley Fred and George should get to listen to the Order stuff because they’re of age and they can’t really stop them) and Dumbledore is absolutely the kind of shady bitch to, maybe not openly recruit, but nudge people in the direction of fighting against Voledmort while they’re still at Hogwarts.
And if James and Lily (and maybe the other Marauders) were part of the Order even before they left Hogwarts, that would give them both time to thrice defy Voldemort or whatever the prophecy says. I haven’t gotten that far in the reread.
