Friendly reminder that “because I want to” is a complete and acceptable reason to end a relationship.

You don’t have to have a massive list of reasons or slights. You don’t have to have some terrible revelation or discover a skeleton in their closet. I’m so tired of friends who are like, “I’m not happy...but my partner doesn’t beat me or cheat on me or steal from me. So I should stay with them. ”

Sweetheart, those are bare minimum requirements.

Listen. There is nothing wrong with ending a relationship because you simply do not love them, or you realize you’re happier single, or you have incompatible future goals. Just because someone treats you well doesn’t mean you have to marry them. They are not owed your future just because they are decent human beings. And, frankly, I don’t know a single person who has stayed in a relationship long term who originally stayed, despite uncertainty, because the person was nice.

Staying in a relationship because you feel some sort of warped obligation will only result in resentment down the line. It’s not fair to you or your partner.
