It’s been almost six months since I saw Alysha Shugart’s tattoo in real life at Women in Astronomy IV and I’m still swooning over it. How stunning is this ink?!? Alysha combined aspects of several observatories she has worked at to come up with the design. She is currently working with AURA’s Gemini Observatory.

For everyone who attended Women in Astronomy IV and wanted to know how they could get more of these cards, today the day you have been waiting for! 

I finally managed to contact the artist, Angelique Babson, and she told me the two designs from WiAIV (Moon and Pluto) are both available via Society6. She also confirmed the rumors that she is working on a full collection inspired by the solar system so WATCH THIS SPACE. 

FYI, Society6 has them on sale for over 30% off until midnight. They would make some pretty stellar Christmas cards too...just sayin.

Svaha STEM-themed dresses were in full effect at Women in Astronomy IV, so much so that we’re giving them their own post! 

I was thrilled to be sporting my first Svaha purchase the Rocket Science dress, (one of their newest designs) featuring chalkboard style equations and diagrams related to the calculations from Hidden Figures. Pictured with me is Claudia Knez, who is an astronomer at the University of Maryland specializing in millimeter wave astronomy. On the first day she was rocking Svaha’s Mathematical Symbols dress. 

Columbia alum, Jennifer Weston, is next in the DNA Double Helix dress. 

Lastly, it’s Claudia again along with Eva Noyola, an astronomer from the University of Texas at Austin, in their matching Constellations dresses - which by the way GLOW IN THE DARK. 

Not Pictured: Claudia in the physics equations dress and Jennifer in the periodic table dress, which they both wore over the weekend as well!

Last weekend, I attended Women in Astronomy IV - a conference for focusing specifically on issues affecting the full spectrum of women in the field. 

It will explore the multiplication of disadvantage at the intersection of more than one identity for women of color, members of the LGBTIQA community, women with disabilities, and other underrepresented and marginalized women. This conference will identify the ways in which the field of astronomy must change in order to reap the full benefit of a scientific environment in which the effects of gender bias are minimized.

The conference was an amazing, amazing experience and my brain is still swimming from all that I’ve learned, but for now I thought I’d share some of the fabulous astro fashion on display.
