I never said this blog is birds only soooo...
Rhabdophis tigrinus (Venomous and poisonous)
Saw your post about Melanora via talesfromtreatment and wanted to share pictures I got today of my backyard farm's rat snake! I first found it last summer, climbing in my sheep's pen. Looks like it's now hanging out under our shop. I'm guessing this is the reason I haven't seen a mouse in a while which: huzzah! Thanks little dude.
What lovely photos of a perfect little friend!
I just adore when wild snakes get the recognition and appreciation they so deserve. ♥️🐍
Thanks for sending these and for being a good neighbor!
Something I don’t post about enough is my love for herping! One of my favorite things to do in my free time is go outdoors and find wild snakes. I’ve been doing this for many years now and have caught some truly amazing reptiles.
Here are some recent catches, in the first pics we have a very cranky Eastern Garter Snake. Don’t worry, he was fine, just dramatic. He was quickly put back as to not stress him too much!
In the next set of pics we have some lovely Dekay’s Brown Snakes. I catch a lot of these little guys and they’re such sweethearts! I adore these little guys.
The last pictures show this absolutely beautiful Eastern Water Snake! This individual was absolutely MASSIVE (one of the biggest I’ve caught!) and had the prettiest pattern. Usually these snakes lose their pattern and coloration as they age and turn almost fully black save for the belly, this individual however had lovely vivid patterns. I catch a lot of Water Snakdz and I’ve seen many different individuals. This one might be the prettiest.
DISCLAIMER: Please do not attempt herping/snake catching if you are not highly experienced with proper handling and identification. Do not try this yourself. That being said, with herping, it’s very important to be gentle and calm with the snakes you catch, you should never harm any of the animals you catch. It’s also very important to put the snake back exactly where it was found! Once more, please do not attempt this if you are not properly trained. You’ve been warned!
(No snakes were harmed in any of these photos! Proper handling techniques of safely restraining the head to avoid bites were used. All snakes were released back exactly where they were found within minutes of being caught.)
Despite the blurriness, I was happy to catch a pic of this snake I found sunning itself when I walked the dog this morning. It's hard to get a clearer image while making sure my pup didn't notice this beautiful little guy. It didn't move a bit, certain in its stick disguise under a small tree. Hard to judge sizes from a distance, but I'd guess it was around 18 inches (45.72 cm) or maybe a little longer.
From local Ohio snake guides I'm tentatively ID'ing this as a Butler's garter snake, which specialize in eating earthworms and leeches! Solid chance it's an Eastern garter snake instead.
It’s always the snake-bird beef that produce rennaisance painting-like picture
