I recently began training two potential familiars and I discovered that there isn’t much information out there for new or experienced witches in finding a familiar. I took some time to right down what I have discovered over the years with my familiars. My experience is from the perspective of a 3rd generation witch, so don’t fret and just take a deep breath, not everything will work for you as it does for me. Neither will everything that works for you work for me.
Your familiar isn’t always your pet. (My dog Maddie, I love her to death, is definitely not my familiar)
Your familiar might not be an animal, but rather a specific rock, plant, metal, or fossil. One of my familiars is labradorite. A stone that has encaptured me since I laid eyes on it.
Don’t assume that you will have a powerful familiar right off the bat. Usually, like with your power, you start out small. There are some cases in natural born witches and multiple generational witches, where they have a powerful familiar immediately.
Younger animals, babies, are too young to understand their own energy yet, so it takes time to see if a younger animal has familiar behaviors and energies.
In contrast, there are some young creatures where you can feel the familiar bond and qualities immediately
Look for your familiar, look for repetitions and take note of any unusual energy you might feel.
You can have multiple familiars! I have two currently, my snake Keegan and labradorite. But I do have what I call “familiars in training”. I have already established that I commonly have a connection with cats, usually black ones, so I am exposing my two black kittens to my altar and practices and things are going fairly well. One kitten, Pumpkin is showing great promise already, but Pickles is still so erratic with his energy it is impossible to tell.
Don’t panic, your familiar will find you.
There are spells that can help show your familiar where you are, but I haven’t had success with them. That doesn’t mean they won’t work for you!
