Musical Meaning has been on a brief hiatus (and will continue to be for, oh, maybe the next week or two) due to travel (We visited friends in Denmark.), dissertation writing (I'm writing 10,000 words on devadasi reform and Bharatanatyam in colonial and post-colonial South India.), packing (We return to the States on Tuesday.), and preparing for job interviews/demo lessons (Please keep your fingers crossed for me; the job I'm interviewing for is my dream job.)
See you all again soon! In the meantime, please enjoy this video of Fatoumata Diawara performing Wilile. Born in the Ivory Coast to Malian parents, Diawara achieved local fame as a dancer before moving to Bamako in her early teens and beginning an acting career. She has also toured internationally with the theatre troupe Royal de Luxe, starred in the musical Kirikou et Karaba, recorded and toured with Oumou Sangare, and written a film script.
