Been thinking about that AI post I reblogged earlier, and the point about it pushing the real writers out.
Because, yeah. Fuck genAI, but even if it was possible to tell for certain if something's been AI generated/assisted (it's not), or even if online AI checkers were accurate (they're not), when you call out supposed AI writing, do you know who's not paying attention? Anyone who's already using it. They've made that decision. They don't care.
You know who does care? Who is paying attention? Everyone else. The newbie writers. The insecure writers. The writers who aren't usually insecure but can read the wrong bit of discourse on the wrong day and immediately abandon all their WIPs for six months. (Hi, it's me!)
The people who are reading all this are the people who already know they struggle keeping tenses consistent. The people writing in a second language, or who have never been entirely sure about when you should use an em-dash or a semi-colon, or who really, really want to publish their first fic but are already hugely insecure about how long a sentence is too long, because all the writing advice varies and the writers they admire do use long sentences but it never quite sounds the same when they try it...
When you call this stuff out as tell-tale signs of AI, it's not going to make the slightest bit of difference to whether someone decides to use AI or not, but it will absolutely make a difference to that writer who was already nervous about publishing their stuff online. It's a guaranteed way to make sure you end up with nothing but AI generated fics because you've scared everyone else off.
Do you know what might actually help? Encouraging new or less popular writers. Offering to mentor or beta-read or bounce ideas around. Leaving comments and positive feedback pointing out the specific bits you enjoyed. Not leaving comments asking if a fic's been abandoned because it's not been updated for a couple of weeks (people have lives!!). Reading and commenting not just on the big zeitgeisty fics that get updated weekly, but on one-shots or WIPs that get updated only sporadically or not at all.
In short, treating your fic writers like fellow kids having fun in sandbox we're all playing in instead of (ugh) content creators.
(And yes, it's absolutely possible to write a novel-length fic in a few weeks without AI when you're hyperfixating hard. I've done it twice; the first time I was unemployed, the second time it was during the first Covid lockdown. Other times it's taken me months or even years to write a short one-shot. Brains are complicated. Not everyone wants to tell the world their personal circumstances. Don't make assumptions.)

Mostly shame
The entirety of the MW3 campaign is honestly such bullshit and the more I think about it the more pissed off I get.
Refusing to believe that Price would've let Makarov live for even a second. Captain John Price, who has had the goal of killing Makarov for YEARS and hunting him down just... lets him live???????
The only reason I would accept him not letting Soap kill Makarov is because he wanted to do it himself For starters... they just... trust that Makarov will stay in the prison??? He's like "ah this always works out, no one has ever escaped from prison ever :)". Okay, yeah, right, sure. That's NEVER backfired at all what so ever, and y'know, obviously no one would eveeeeeer come to free him and the group that he heads definitely wouldn't swarm to get him back.
I don't give a shit if he got orders to stand down and to not do it - I'm refusing to believe John Price, after everything he's sacrificed and done, would accept that for one single second. Why on EARTH would he let Makarov live when he KNOWS that in no way, shape, or form would that ever be a good idea. I don't think there's a single order that would get him to not kill Makarov - not my Price
"Oh oh but Makarov can provide intel!" SINCE WHEN. Since when would he actually cooperate. Since when would he do anything other than gain information for himself, play mind games, and then INEVITABLY escape. HE KNOWS THAT. Everyone knows that. It's just COMMON SENSE
Makarov is nearly just telling them everything, legit point blank. TO THEIR FACES what he's going to do. And they're just like :) HE CANNOT BE MORE OBVIOUS PLEEEEEASE
There's just. So much utter bullshittery in every corner of the campaign I really wonder if the people behind it knew anything about narrative story telling or the characters they're writing for. I can slap a wombat on a keyboard and whatever it wrote would probably make more sense than the slop we were given. I can dump a can of alphabet soup in a bowl and it would make more sense
(And yes, I'm aware of the original plans of it likely not being a full game on its own but that doesn't excuse the writing or what we got. I'm AWARE of the background)
Honestly am expecting "It's Makaroving time" and he Makarovs everywhere to be the next step we're getting
