This week I became enchanted by a strange, elegant, deliriously entertaining film called “Judex”. Made in 1963 by George Franju, it is a reimagining of the epic silent film serial of the same name by Louis Feuillade which was part of his trilogy of insane crime serials that dominated French popular culture in the early days of cinema. Even their titles give shivers of delight “Fantomas”, “Les Vampires” and “Judex” (Latin for justice). They are surreal, romantic, pulp fiction fueled joy. Super criminals with world crime leagues enact heists and kidnappings with blimps and airships and preposterous new (and sometimes never existed) technology and always while wearing flamboyant disguises, costumes and capes. In these films crime is a form of high theatrical art to be committed with flourish and panache. And the 1963 version of Judex is wonderful poker faced celebration of of the originals. The film opens with a costume ball where everyone is dressed as giant birds. The villain (of course dressed as a vulture) is murdered at the stroke of midnight by a poisoned glass of champagne (or is he?) what follows is perfection: beautifully dressed people clad in masks and capes and armed with secret gadgets or daggers go about kidnapping heiresses, dashing to their secret lairs and committing increasingly elaborate crimes in an affectionately recreated 1900s imaginary France that never was. And all in the name of justice and unrequited love. There is a black leotard clad femme fatale, and poison gasses, and packs of loyal guard dogs, and magic screens, and mental telepathy, and secret disguises, and chain smoking assassin nuns, and scrappy kid sidekicks, and capped avengers(very Batman) even a random circus of acrobat crime fighters with lines like “My father the lion tamer hated you. But his lions ate him so now we can marry.” When the beautiful femme most fatale is finally killed a boy (who she tried to kill) cries sorrowfully over her body “she was magnificent “ So is the film. It will be in my dreams forever. Hey everyone! Easter is tomorrow, and the guardians need us more than ever. William Joyce has been fighting long and hard to give us more Rise of the Guardians content, and he can’t do it alone. He needs to show Dreamworks that us - the fans - still care about it, and he has asked for our help multiple times in the past. So this Easter, let’s show Dreamworks and William Joyce that we still love and care about Rise of the Guardians!

Since Rise of the Guardians takes place on Easter, lets all try to watch it sometime this weekend (or sometime next week) and post a picture of you and your family watching it. If you don’t feel comfortable with a picture of yourself, then maybe take one of it playing on your TV! Maybe have a little fun and cosplay or show off your merchandise, or maybe even make Rise of the Guardians themed treats!

“Have you harmed them?”

“No, my lord,” replied the captain. It’s lips curled into a small, satisfied smile.

“ They are dead.”

Lord Pitch stood stoically. He was a gentleman of the Golden Age, a commander of its armies. Even now, he felt he must maintain his judgement and composure. But the pirate captain was too keen to bring forth his hurts.

“Your lady so feared our company that she threw herself to her doom, and the child with her,” the captain gloated.

Lord Pitch could barely speak. He looked from one pirate to another. “Is this true?”

The captain grinned. “It’s true, my lord. I saw it myself. As did we all.”

Lord Pitch, bringing his face within inches of the captain’s, said with a measured calm, “Then feast your eyes on mine. They are the last things you will ever see.” And with startling suddenness, he drew his sword and cut the captain’s head from its body.

Timeline Help?!?

I’m trying to write a story focusing on some side characters in the same universe as the guardians but am having trouble keeping track of when all the major events of the book series takes place.
