What is Rito-gust?

Rito-gust (Rito August) is a month-long prompt event about creating art, writing, and other wonderful things related to our favorite bird people.

What can I make?

Art, writing, and anything else creative is welcome! Really, anything is welcome with the following exceptions:

Don't use generative AI to create your submissions.

Don't make anything sexually explicit or with excessive gore - if it would need a content filter on Tumblr, reconsider posting it.

You're free to make submissions featuring canon Rito, your own Rito OCs, or a mix of both. You're also welcome to make Rito from the Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom era or the Wind Waker era. Really, all I ask is that your submission is related to the Rito in some way.

Do I need to participate every day?

No! You're more than welcome to do all of the prompts if you want, but you're also more than welcome to participate only once - there's no pressure to do more than you want to.

When can I work on/submit my pieces?

You're free to start working on things today if you want to, but please don't post them until the start of August. Late submissions will also be welcome - I'll keep patrolling the tags to reblog late submissions, so don't stress about finishing by August 31st.

Botw Imagine: Teba and Revali meeting a past, Wind Waker-style Rito

The Rito designs from Wind Waker were so good, easily one of my favorites in the whole series, so I figured I'd write some headcanons involving them. Hope you enjoy!

Oh boy

This bird was flabbergasted when he first saw you

I mean, you're a Hylian with a bird beak stuck to your face

How does one even react to that?

He almost thought you were cursed or something

So when you said you were a Rito, he was almost offended

Like, "Nonsense, Rito look nothing like that!! 😠"

But then he found out, probably from Robbie or Purah, that you were, in fact, a Rito

You just happened to be an older Rito from long before this era

And the existential crisis began

He was stuttering and muttering and looking so confused

Ya know his reaction to Terakko (eggbot)? It was sorta like that

Only much more personal, since you're technically one of his kind

And jesus, can you imagine his reaction to finding out the (Wind Waker) Rito evolved from the Zora?

"That means the Zora and I.. are almost related??"

Existential Crisis 2, electric boogaloo

He can't bear to look Mipha directly in the eye for awhile after that

Or you, for that matter

Still, he's sorta civil. As civil as Revali can be, I suppose

Because, you are still a Rito, and technically an Elder Rito at that, so he cares for you more than most

He's still a bit nervous to show you Rito village, though

Just because you're so different than the other Rito there

He's got an image to upkeep and showing up with some Humanoid Beak-faced Person might tarnish that

And god knows Revali can't have that 🙄

But aside from that, you two get along relatively well

Teba

It was really awkward when he first met you

He just kinda looked at you and said “Uh, hello…”

Much like Revali, he didn’t really know how to react to you

But, he was much better at understanding that you were a Rito, just an older version of one

If anything he finds it pretty fascinating

“So, you’re the same species as me, just from thousands of years earlier? Incredible..”

For Human’s that’d be the equivalent of meeting our simian ancestors, so you can imagine the crackpot of feelings that’d come with this

But still, he tries to keep an open mind

He wants to know a lot about what Rito culture was like in your time

But he won’t ask too directly, mostly just a few questions while he's busy fixing his bow or something

And he teaches you a lot about modern Rito culture in return

He’ll even offer to take you to the modern Rito village!

Don’t worry, he’ll death glare anyone who stares at you funny

He introduces you to his wife and son, who you find absolutely adorable of course

His son loves you immediately, thinks you’re super cool

But when he finds out that, back in your day, the Rito evolved from Zora…

It was a lot to process, on top of everything else no less

He will never look at Zora the same way again, he swears

The existential crisis lasts for weeks

He doesn’t even mention that to his wife or kids, it’s just too much to process

But other than that, he likes you just fine
