I need to clarify something for my story; how aware is a system of alters? I know the host will be pretty unaware of their alters at first, but how aware are alters, usually? Also how might a severe concussion affect someone with DID? Originally, I was going to give the character speech and motor issues after the concussion, but now I've given him DID and I'm not sure how it would affect his alters
it really depends on the alter. typically most/all of them are more aware than the host but that’s not always the case. it’s not easy to explain... as far as I know, alters are usually pretty aware. Trauma alters aren’t always, and can feel stuck in the past. (I might update this later with more perspective but rn this is all I’ve got, sorry)
I’ve had concussions before and they typically make me more dissociated for a while afterwards. I’ll lose time more frequently, but rather than another alter fronting, I might go to a dissociative “blank” state. Zoning out and memory issues get more frequent. I’m not sure speech and motor issues would be common unless your character had a really bad concussion- memory issues, zoning out, concentration issues are all much more common. You have to figure, the brain is a very adaptable organ but concussions are brain bruising and brain damage. Speech and motor skills aren’t necessarily the first to be affected- balance, yeah. Planning/forethought, yeah. What part of the brain gets hit? What are some common concussion symptoms? How does it affect the character right away, and how does it continue affecting them for years to come? (brains do heal, but it’s complex). One concussion will only do so much- repeated concussions?
People with DID are affected just like everyone else. For me at least, minor concussions increase disorientation pretty substantially for a couple days/weeks, and then everything goes back to normal. Major concussions will do more damage and I would suggest you just apply your research to someone with DID, bearing in mind that we tend to dissociate away from everything. Headaches, dizziness/balance issues, concentration issues, irritability/some emotion regulation issues, not feeling like oneself, etc- these are more likely. If it’s a really bad concussion, maybe looking more into information about brain damage can help you figure out specifically what kind of injury would have the effects you want to write.
Good luck, let me know if you have more questions!
