“You're probably wondering why are you here. First of all, have you ever met each other before today?”
The five boys looked at each other across the large table and shook their heads. They didn't even dare to speak to each other as the whole situation was still unclear.
“As I presumed.” The man grinned. “Do you really have no idea about why are you here?”
One of the boys, the one with messy black hair, looked away and the man smiled again.
“Song Mino,” he said, and the boy with messy hair looked up, almost scared. “Whenever you're stressed or upset something weird happen around you, and you're the only one who feels it, aren't you?”
The other four boys looked at the boy with questioning eyes. Song Mino swallowed hard and said nothing.
“Kim Jinwoo,” the man went on. “Your parents bought you a villa out of the city and you've lived there alone for as long as you can remember, not knowing to this day why your parents wanted you to be isolated from the rest of the world. Still, even if you're alone all the time, you have the feeling you're not really alone in there, don't you?”
A boy with big innocent eyes looked up, puzzled. “Ho-how do you know...”
But the man ignored him and went on to the next boy. “Nam Taehyun,” he was reading from some files he had in front of him now. “2001: a boy named Jihwan fell from a swing and died. At the time police reported, though not officially, about a child saying he had warned little Jihwan about not playing with swings because he knew he would have died. Jihwan was your best friend. That child was you.” He looked up and a boy with middle-parted hair looked away, lips trembling. “2004: a woman named Park Bom had a car accident. She didn't die but she hasn't been able to walk since then. She was your neighbor back then. You were 10 years old and you said “cars are bad, Park Bom noona shouldn't use the car anymore”. The thing is, you said these exact words the day before the accident took place. No one paid attention to the words of a 10-years-old boy of course.”
The boy named Nam Taehyun clenched his fists. “How do you know all that...?” he whispered through gritted teeth.
“But the most interesting thing is you left your home some months ago because, as you reported to the police,” he took another file and started reading. “you were sure your housemaid was going to kill you. You called the police on 2nd July and while panicking you said something about how you had hurt your finger while taking care of some flowers and as soon as you saw blood spilling out of the wound you had a “vision” of your housemaid killing you with a pair of scissors. You cut the call soon after and you left the house the same day. You never went back there since then.” The man looked up again but the boy refused to look him in the eyes.
“Visions...?” he heard one of the other boys, the one with big eyes, whispering. “How do they know all about our lives...?”
Nam Taehyun pressed his lips in a tight line and said nothing.
“Then we have Kang Seungyoon,” the man looked at a boy with full lips and black hair, whose eyes were focused somewhere undefined. “You once saved a woman who was about to be robbed and raped. You called the police and told them the exact address where they could find the woman. You said you heard her screams. The funny thing is, you made the call from a call box which was five kilometers away from the alley where the woman was. One could say you have really good ears.” He grinned again, but the boy just looked in another direction without showing any particular emotion. The man didn't look like he expected some kind of reaction from the boy and went on.
“And the last, but not the least, Lee Seunghoon,” he took another bunch of papers from the table.
A tall boy with small eyes was now looking at him.
“You come from a wealthy family and you have a personal bodyguard following you 24/7, as expected from the son of an important businessman. You must think your father loves you very much, even if sometimes the lack of freedom probably bothers you. You're also probably wondering, after all you've heard about your colleagues, what are you doing here since you don't have anything special except for your bank account.” The man in black suit grinned again. “Well, let me tell you just one thing Mister Lee: those bodyguards aren't paid to protect you. They're paid to protect others from you.”
Lee Seunghoon widened his eyes a bit. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” and now the man stood up. “That you're all here because you're somehow different from any other human being. In fact, you're probably not human at all, or not completely at least.”
The five boys were holding their breath, looking shocked.
The man looked dead serious now. “You're here because you're special. And the whole humankind needs you.”
