[image id: a watercolor map of Maaren, which I scanned. It depicts a city at the delta of a river, and the Avian city carved in the canyon cliffs that the river cuts through, with houses stacked atop each other like a jenga tower and stretching up the length of the river. At the edge of the inland mountains there’s a gate into the Avian city made of two giant statues of the founders of the city with their wings stretching over the river. Just inside the gate is a massive building towering above the peaks of the mountains that serves as the Magistra court and Academy.
Near the river delta is farmland that feeds the rest of the human city that crowds around the river, mountains, and sea. In the city are two places of note - the Atilan palace and the Arena. In the top right corner is the anarchist camp. Arga points north across the Maariad Sea but is not pictured in this map. a compass rose is at bottom center. The paper is weathered and browned and creased, and the edges are ripped from time. End image ID.]
Hi! now you guys can know what on earth I’m talking about when I reference places in my book!
This was my first ever attempt at watercolor and for the fact that I didn’t have watercolor paper and it ended up looking ancient and messed up, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Maaren is a city state on the southern continent in the world of Laoche that I’ve not yet named. I’m going to make another map that shows Laoche as a whole (or at least the relevant places for my series) eventually, including Maaren, the archipelago islands, and a bunch of other cool stuff that’s still in development currently.
Let me know what you think! (and if you have any suggestions on how to actually paint well, I will gladly take any tips you’ve got)
