thinking about writing a witchcraft coven!bunch of friends au. a few years ago i wrote this fic in the sturniolo triplets fandom, which basically sets up a world where witches, magic, and covens have always existed in secret but in 2021 the "witches council" (governmental force for witches) decides to make witchcraft a publicly known thing.
there's a whole coven system and witches pick/are assigned specialties which is basically the main form of magic a witch practices. for example, a medium is just a witch who specializes in communication with/rituals that involve ghosts. a prophet is a witch who specializes in fortune telling magic/clairvoyancy.
in this world magic is like. a genetic thing. so people usually start off learning magic from their "family coven" where they master the basics and declare (or in some situations, are assigned) their specialties and then you usually break off and start your own branch of the "family coven" or you go join another existing one.
i set up the idea of covens where everyone practices one kind of magic in the sturniolo triplets fic, where kids are raised up only being taught one kind of magic due to tradition. I think having Anthony come from a coven like this and practicing clairvoyancy (prophecy) or something would be angsty as he breaks traditions and learns other kinds of magic with his friends
i don't address whether witches can be born into non witch families in the other fic but i definitely think it could happen. like genes skipping a few generations. Coy being a witch AND gay in a religious family. god the angst potential. i could go even crazier and have his specialty be like. necromancy or something else stereotypically dark. and he was forced to hide it and be ashamed of it so he's only just now learning how to do basic magic in his twenties.
i would love for Hanbon to be an elemental. elemental magic is considered very basic in this universe and kids are often taught basic elemental spells early on, so elemental specialty witches are considered as not being very talented. but Hanbon would be cracked. she's mastered all the elements and is The Avatar basically, which in combination gives her the ability to lightly control weather and such too. she's underestimated often, but she was raised in a typical coven and is the most well-studied out of her friends.
Will would be a potion making witch because every good coven needs one OBVIOUSLY. i think he was also raised in a typical family coven, to balance out coy and anthony's more unique experiences, but he definitely didn't study as hard as Hanbon did growing up.
anyways i think the plot would be like, they're all living together and hiding their witchcraft from each other for various reasons, they definitely aren't public about their magic because some people in this world aren't fans of it. there would be angsty lead up and miscommunication until the reveal, and then gradual build up to them Becoming A Coven and then maybe eventually they reveal publicly and there would be some video-fic chapters.
idk it's silly but i think showing content creators in worlds they Couldn't Exist In is sooo fun
Day 9 AUgust:
Will-o'-the-Wisp Gardening au (cont. of whichcraft)
Gaz wasn't even supposed to be out here today.
It was the turn of a new session, dew hanging in the air as Gaz fought through the leaves. He loved fall, he really did, but it always made finding ingredients so much harder...
Usually Soap would be on duty today, fighting through the fallen leaves in search of ingredients for potions and such. It was always good whenever he went out as he almost always had something he forgot to put on the list. Instead though, he had bribed Kyle to take his spot today.
He knew the man could never turn down the offer of Soap taking over cooking duty...
So that's why he was out here, fighting through another pile of leaves, all while he searched for those miniscule mushrooms Price had wanted.
It was an impossible task, sure, but at least it was a nice day out. Crisp air, nice quiet forest, even if he couldn't find all the ingredients at least he'd have a good walk.
Or at least that was his plan- his plan that was quickly derailed when he found him.
Gaz recognized the shape in a heartbeat, even with how curled up it was. The beast that had been stalking around their shop, the same one Gaz had grown attached to.
He had seen it quite a few times, always on the edge of the woods. Large, almost insect like, and almost definitely dangerous. Still though, it never seemed to hold any ill intentions to the group! It simply liked to watch.
So Gaz let it.
Whereas Soap would complain that he found watching him while he tested his new potions, Gaz had taken to letting the thing watch. Keeping his curtains open, staying towards the back of the garden where he knew it liked to stay, even placing food out for it on days he didn't see it.
Sure it never approached, but that was okay. Gaz was used to magical creatures of all kinds, they were always a bit nervous when first meeting him! He could wait as long as he needed, eventually he would get to see the cryptid up close.
He just wished it hadn't happened like this.
The poor thing was badly injured, clearly caught in a fire. Its thin wings had been cracked and torn, its antennae snapped. The work of hunters no doubt- they always aim for parts necessary for escape. Poor thing probably couldn't navigate properly, much less fly!
Thankfully Gaz just so happened to be learning a new healing spell from Price...
Focusing the magic, he started towards the center of the body. It was large and badly hurt, there would be no way for Gaz to help it all in one sitting. He could only heal it enough it could do the rest on its own and hope it would trust him enough to come back for more.
Focus on the vital parts, he told himself, what does it need to live?
Organs were first.
He was clearly an insect, almost like a Roach? That makes things harder.
Carapace next.
Antennae...
He was so focused on healing, he hadn't even noticed his own hands starting to shake. Magic was a difficult task- *especially* healing. It took a lot of energy, energy Gaz was quickly running out of.
He would never admit the squeak he let out when it grabbed his arm.
"Christ mate- you startled me! What happened? Are you okay? Pain?"
He wasn't even sure if it knew English, didn't stop him from trying...
He watched as it raised a hand and... Starting signing?
'better'
Then,
'thanks'
Gaz was honestly proud he remembered that much. Could he sign anything back? No. Could he at least understand? Thankfully it seemed so. He quietly thanked his sister's boyfriend for teaching him bsl.
Using whatever he could remember mixed with some rather clunky finger spelling, Gaz responded both verbally and visually.
"Can you hear me?"
'Yes,'
Well that helps him a bit, at least right now in the moment.
"What happened?"
He sat watching as the creature, Gary as he introduces himself, explained.
He had been following the 141 around for months, specifically Kyle. He had been drawn to the man after he watched him helping the wildlife one day and had quickly grown curious. Today as he went near the town, hoping to find some flowers as an offering and a chance to finally speak to the man (Gaz felt his face heating up at that one, it was a sweet thought) some trappers had found him.
Was it a bit creepy? Sure, Gaz could admit that. But it was clear that Gary didn't see it that way. He obviously wasn't the most used to humans, and he definitely didn't seem embarrassed or purposefully gross when describing following Gaz. He just seemed genuinely curious.
By the end of the story, Gaz had used almost all of his magic. Gary was at least looking a bit better, if not still a little injured. He had moved on from talking about what happened to instead talking about his life. For someone who didn't seem to have the ability to speak, he sure was chatty.
Getting up and dusting off his legs, Gaz held out a hand.
"A'right mate, 've done what I can for today. But... You're welcome to come back with me. We've got room, lots of food too. I can uh- make sure you're healing right? No pressure obviously- 'm not gonna kidnap you! I just-"
He was interrupted by Gary grabbing his hand, using it to pull himself up.
He was tall, much taller than Gaz, and built like a fucking brick. Kyle didn't fully process just how large the guy was until he was standing in front of him, holding his hand with one of his four arms.
Using two of his free hands, Gary signed back. A small buzz was building up in his chest, something that seemed good from as far as Gaz could tell.
'lead the way!'
Coven's Riot
Batten down the fucking hatches
This is what you get when you still play with matches
Now we go back to sticks, back to stones
'Cause the words broke our bones, and we're
Right back to the same old habits
Too bad, we almost had it

Before and After:
My little brother is a magic prodigy!
At a very young age, prodigies can be spotted... Their handle of magic is natural, not taught like normal witches.
The doctor says it's most likely. My parents have always wanted a magic prodigy for a child! Maybe of he has natural powers, I have them too... Though, it kind of scares me...
A few days ago, the Kratt brothers enrolled in the school... The little one caught my eye. I could sense his power... Strong, destructive.
The only worrying thing is that when Chris started to show signs of being a prodigy, using magic made him cough blood and is very sick, but the doctors never found anything wrong in his system.
His energy was different. I know what that kind of aura feels like... I can't believe his allowed him to enroll in a magic school with such a condition. He has wicked magic in him. I know just how he must feel... Sick, helpless and weak, though powerful.
Many people say my brother might be a "bad witch", but I don't think so... It's true that we've had some... Accidents that neither of us are proud off. But I wasn't gonna just stand still while people makes fun of an ill magic prodigy.
Something about the older brother throws me off. Even if he might seem "normal" I know he's done wrong, I know he's a bad sign. I don't know what it is, but if he ever learns magic... It won't turn out good.
I know it's a risk for me to be learning magic. But my mom thought she might have two prodigies so here I am. To be honest, I don't care about learning spells. I care about my little brother and I'm here to protect him.
I might be wrong about them... But my instincts have been sharpening for years so I can notice... I can notice when it happens.
He's a blessing, a natural witch.
He's cursed...
