I imagine other hunters must have asked Sam and Dean about the angel. We know from the beginning that hunters love gossip. For sure everybody in their community knows who they are and that they somehow fraternized with an angel. So surely some people (probably drunk) asked them about this creature. Holy entity who can kill with just a thought. They probably expect the brothers to tell horrifying stories about the power of said being. But no. When asked about Castiel's powers, Sam starts talking about how Cas never washes the dishes and just makes them clean when it's his turn. Then goes on how they binged two seasons of the Wire together ("He's a nice person to watch shows with, he never really asks questions, and doesn't talk until the episode is over".) And at last he mentions that they go to the farmers' market every week and never take Dean because he always complains insensitively. Hunters are confused with the response so they ask Dean. And he says pretty much the same things Sam did but from his pov. So he mentions that Cas makes him coffee in the morning, goes about how terrible his taste in music is, and that yeah having an angel to patch you up after a hunt is nice but he always gives them a lecture that they should be more careful with their lives. He sums it up saying something along the lines of "he's a weird, dorky, little guy". Hunters are mostly confused but amused at the same time. Oh, so this angel guy is nothing special, huh? The word goes around and the community really starts to believe it. Until they meet Castiel, the angel of the Lord, for the first time. Could be on a hunt with the Winchesters or in the bunker. Then they realise that the brothers are in fact nuts because who would look at this eerie thing and call it a nickname? Castiel rarely blinks, and when he does, it's strange like he's mimicking everyone around him. He walks extremely quietly, almost silently. He doesn't breathe. The sixth sense every hunter has is tingling every time he's around. One of them even sees how Cas makes lore books levitate around him. And then Sam just comes in and asks Cas to put them back in their place because he can hit somebody with them. Another one notices Dean coming up to Cas with a cup of coffee asking to warm it for him. And the angel does, with a fire coming out of his hand. And no matter how many people tell Sam and Dean that what the angel does it crazy they can't understand (and don't care, really) and just go back to watching movies with their best friend.
