So I went to see Obsession last night with a friend. We love watching horror movies together and we're both pretty chill when it comes to being scared except for the one time we tried to watch Sinister in my basement together with the lights off and I got too scared so we went upstairs and watched Grave Encounters instead. She still holds that against me but I think I was justified because the Sinister tapes are terrifying sequences especially with the audio.
We were both excited to see Obsession and didn't think the premise sounded that scary. We were planning to get a few good jump scares and giggle the rest of the time. And we were wrong. Or I was wrong. I don't think she was as scared as I was for most of it but to be fair I already have anxiety in movie theaters so I wonder if at home it'll be less scary.
I was so uncomfortable for pretty much the whole movie after Bear made his wish. I won't spoil anything here and I also don't want to explain beat by beat every part that scared me because that's boring but I was terrified a lot. Eyes were covered multiple times, which is why I kind of can't wait to watch it at home because I think I missed some good parts.
I will say one kind of spoilery part, it's not a plot point or a specific scare just an acting and choreography choice:
The weird stop motion movements Niki did. OOOOHHH NO. no. That really got under my skin.
Obsession is totally worth the hype and the 45 minutes to drive to the closest theater near me that shows horror. Side note, we have a tiny theater that's like 15-20 minutes away, not far, that only shows two movies at once and it always just does the cheesy "blockbuster" movies and rarely anything good. Like for example things like Mario, Sheep Detectives, Toy Story 5, Wicked. The only thing I'm excited they're showing is Brand New Day in July.
Go see Obsession!

Visual storytelling in relation to the s3 trailer
I love the visual storytelling of this show in regard to narration and POV. The first time we see Claudia in season 2 she doesn’t speak, she has no voice, only Louis reading her words. She’s dead, we only have her diaries left to be read by others, the perfect reminder given that at the start of season two, Louis seems to rely on her diaries to determine what is true and what isn't. On the contrary, the first time we meet Louis, we actually hear his voice first, before seeing him, but it’s a recording! From the San Francisco interview, a little clue of Armand’s involvement behind the scenes, now that Louis contacts Daniel again.
The first time we actually SEE Louis he’s facing us. It’s his interview, his desire for an odyssey of recollection. Directly looking at his audience.
Seeing Lestat for the first time is the opposite. In season 1 the first thing we see of Lestat is his back, we don’t know him. The first time we see his face he’s looking at Louis, but Louis doesn’t see him. And later we hear his voice for the first time, but we don’t see him speak and he’s talking in a foraging language. It’s a constant disconnect.
And the trailer follows this visual language. The season hasn’t premiered yet, we still don’t know Lestat’s story in his own words, so we start the trailer with his back turned on us. He’s not facing us, as if he wants to hide something too, maybe he won’t be so open to share as Louis was.
They could have shown us his face for the first time on stage, given the stage symbolizes exposure, but they actually show his body! Following the theme we’re seeing about Lestat’s sexualization and hyperexposure being tied to dehumanization. We see his face for the first time with Gabi, who has known him the longest. Then his world seems to turns upside down, and right after we see him at the bookstore. That’s what the publication of the book has done to his life.
I’m so excited for the new season!!!
2009 phyuri!!! Thx to this tweet
remus was a homeschooled kid im telling you
Should’ve known social media was going downhill when people started using their baby pictures as social currency essentially. Like why are we flexing that we liked spider man or hello kitty as a kid? Wow look at me drinking soda from a can while wearing a kids size beetles shirt my parents put me in when I was four. I’m so chill guy for posting this and using yet another baby picture as my profile picture. WE GET IT YOU HAD A GOOD CHILDHOOD THATS SO “NOSTALGIA CORE”. ME TOO BUT IM NOT POSTING MY AWKWARD BABY PICTURES TO PROVE IT. It’s almost worse than posting a cover of some indie song on your guitar with a vintage lamp in the background. Being pretentious about your childhood is insane to me. Genuinely imagine these people yelling across the house “MOM DO YOU HAVE A PICTURE OF ME FROM WHEN I WAS THREE THAT I CAN POST ON MY INSTAGRAM.” Leave the baby pictures posts for the Facebook moms and dads on birthdays.
Lestat: whoring around as a rockstar, telling his life story
Armand subplot:
I- I’m like you, I still like pizza and board games, I- I just like boys.
OOOOHHHH I GET IT. HE CAN BE CALLED A FAG AND A FAIRY BUT HE CANT SAY FOR HIMSELF THAT HE IS A GAY MAN. RIIIIGHT. BITCH HES GAY. LET HIM SAY GAY. G-A-Y.
This scene solidified some things for me. Yeah.
