Lev Tolstoy claimed, I am told, that a person who has never in his life smoked a cigarette is incapable of committing a true crime in the fullest sense of the word. There is a certain amount of exaggeration in that view, since we know that, in Europe for example, long before tobacco was introduced people cut one another’s throats no less enthusiastically. Perhaps alcohol helped them do it—who knows, it is not my intention to write a history of narcotics throughout the entire world. Besides, once there was no alcohol either. But however far back one goes in human history, one can always come across some 'narcotic phantasm.' Evidently when human consciousness reached a certain level of acuteness, it simply could not live with itself in the midst of the metaphysical dread of Existence and had somehow to assuage its own perspicacity.
Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, “Narcotics”
