TL;DR - "I met Lord Mountbatten."
Dragon - Breath Owl Breath
Let these words speak, let our eyes never meet, cause' even if you loved me, What would the people think? What would they do to you? They'll just keep fighting and I'll keep writing to you.
Even though I fly through the smoke, doesn't mean I made the flare. On my head, fire in my throat, doesn't mean I made the flare.
Personal Favourites: Deep and Meaningful Lyrics, Part 1
Lyrics is an important element of a song through which an emotion of a song is vividly communicated. It's like hearing the birds early in the morning signalling sunrise. Here's my take on some of my favourite lyrics written by musicians which are not in priority order:
1. The Smiths - I Know It's Over
Morrissey is a genius. His direct and simplistic approach of writing lyrics always finds a way to cut the heart and open eyes. He must have gone through a deep depression stage or has an excellent empathetic skill. The whole song describes well how one behaves in a state of depression after a separation from a loved one up to a point of suicidal. The opening line:"Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head', is just enough to put me in a melancholy state of mind while listening to this song. Another excellent line that really stands out for me is: "It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind". This line gets to me because it's the truth. And what truth it is!
2. Jeff Buckley - Lover You Should've Come Over
I heard from an interview he did before a show that he wrote this song after ending a relationship with an older woman. The lyrics are beautiful. The hauntingly beautiful comparison of feeling with that of loss through this line: "Looking out the door I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners, parading in a wake of sad relations as their shoes fill up water"set the sad tone of the song nicely. And "Too young to hold on, and too old to just break free and run" is profoundly paradoxical. I look at this line as: I'm too young to be serious in this relationship but I need you, so I'm a selfish asshole up to a point that you'd have to leave me behind.
3. Bob Dylan - Times They Are A-Changin'
This song will always be relevant in my humble opinion. Because life is all about changes. He sounds very prophetic but there's nothing prophetic about having to see that the world will keep on turning and changes will come and go. But he puts it into a song so sweetly and present during the crazy times in the 60's. His line, "Come mothers and fathers throughout the land and don't criticise what you can't understand" and "The line it is drawn the curse it is cast, the slow one now will later be fast" is a message I can't never forget -- accepting change and empathising and understanding things before passing judgment. With the hipsters, I have found to have done all the above but I still hate them. Thanks Bob.
