I woke up to my husband shuffling the covers and getting out of bed. I opened my eyes the tiniest amount possible and squinted at the clock in our room.
It was three in the morning. What the hell was he doing at three in the morning?
"Theese? What are you doing?" I groaned, rolling over so I could at least sort of look in his direction.
"Don't worry about it, darling. Go back to bed. I'm sorry I woke you."
I didn't say anything else, but I kept squinting at him as he made his way through the dark bedroom, until he flicked on the light in the bathroom and closed the door. I groaned and flipped over onto my stomach, hugging the pillow and closing my eyes again. I'd just started drifting off when Theseus came out of the bathroom. I expected him to come right back to bed, but he didn't. Instead, he went out the bedroom door to the rest of the house.
I sighed heavily. He was up to something, and all I wanted to do was go to bed, but I couldn't until I knew what was going on.
Theseus and I were both Aurors for the Ministry of Magic, and we'd been dealing with a case for the past few weeks that dealt with some very dangerous suspects. The entire Aurors' office had been put on high alert, and we were expecting information on the location of our suspects any day now. I had a bad feeling my husband had gotten the news and was going to try to deal with it himself.
I dragged myself out of bed, grabbed my wand, and Disapparated to the front door. Theseus had just started to pull it open when I appeared behind him, the crack that came with Apparition making him jump.
"Y/N! What are you doing out of bed?"
"Better question. What are you doing sneaking out of the house at three in the morning dressed for work?"
Theseus shifted his weight from foot to foot, looking incredibly unhappy to be caught.
"I was going to deal with something urgent," he said. He wasn't quite making eye contact with me, and I rolled my eyes.
"Theseus, I know you got a tip about the location of our suspects. Nothing else could have dragged you out of bed like this."
Theseus met my eyes now, giving me an apologetic look. He let his hand drop from the doorknob and turned to face me fully.
"You know me too well," he said with a smile. I just sighed.
"Please tell me you at least called a few other Aurors to help you make arrests and do the raid and whatever else."
"No. I just got the tip, and it's time sensitive. I couldn't wait for anyone else."
"Unacceptable, try again."
Theseus furrowed his eyebrows at me, but I didn't flinch. I just kept staring him down, arms crossed over my chest.
"Y/N, there's no time for gathering a group of Aurors to go in and do this. By the time we get organized, our suspects will have moved and it will take another three weeks to find them again."
"I agree."
"Then what's the problem?"
"You didn't tell me!" I finally moved from my original position, gesturing with my hands and taking a few steps towards Theseus. "I sleep next to you Theseus! All you have to do to organize a mission with me is wake me up and say 'hey, we're going somewhere, grab your wand'. It's that easy!"
"We have no idea what kind of situation we're going into," said Theseus, like that somehow addressed my complaint.
"We never know what kind of situation we're going into."
"Yes, we do! And when we don't, we have more than two Aurors on the case. This situation has the potential to be far more dangerous than others, it's not safe for you to go."
"And it is safe for you?" I raised an eyebrow as Theseus sighed and shook his head.
"No, but that's not the point-"
"Yeah, Theseus, it is! I don't want you going into dangerous situations without someone to watch your back!"
"And I don't want you going into dangerous situations so unprepared and outnumbered!"
"Back at you! For goodness' sakes Theseus, I'm your wife! Your partner in life! Not to mention your partner on this case for the entire time we've had it. It makes no sense for you to be so ridiculous about this!" I threw my hands up in the air in frustration. Theseus took a few steps closer to me and put his hands on my shoulders, staring intently into my eyes.
"Y/N, I love you. This is something I can handle on my own, and if you got hurt doing something you didn't have to be doing? I could never forgive myself."
"You think I don't feel the same way about you?" I gently took Theseus's hands, trying to force him to understand my words and take them to heart. "Theseus, I don't know what I'd do without you. That's one of my favorite things about being partners with you! We can have each other's backs in the field, and we never have to sit at home worrying if we're ever going to see each other again."
Theseus sighed, but he didn't look completely convinced. He started to speak up again, but I beat him to it.
"Besides, you're the Head of the Auror's Office. You're not supposed to let the personal stuff affect your! We both promised Travers, and I know he'd be disappointed if we failed to keep our relationship from affecting our work..."
Theseus let out a breathy laugh as he looked around, his gaze finally landing back on me.
"You're impossible sometimes, do you know that?"
"Yes I do," I said, a grin spreading across my face. "I take it that means you're done trying to sneak out of the house without me?"
Theseus sighed. "Yes, I'm done."
"Good." I leaned forward quickly to place a kiss on my husband's lips, then smiled at him as I pulled away. "Let's go get these bad guys like the incredible team we are, and then let's sleep for the rest of the day."
"Sounds like a plan," Theseus chuckled and then opened the door, holding it for me and gesturing for me to go first. "After you, my love."
"Thank you." I strutted out the door but came to an abrupt halt when I realized I had no idea where I was going. I turned to look back at Theseus, who was grinning from a few steps behind me.
"Forgetting something?"
"Possibly... in my defense though, it's three in the morning, and I was not prepared for this."
"Don't worry. We're a team, remember?"
Theseus held out his arm for me, and I took it with a smile. I still wanted to kill him a little bit for waking me up so early, and for trying to sneak out in the first place, but he really was a good man. The best partner and friend I could've asked for, and the only person I wanted to have my back when fighting baddies.
