Ugh, alright, can i just talk about how badly I wanted a Draco Malfoy redemption arc?
I love the Harry Potter characters but I don’t love the books. At least not enough to read them over and over. Rowling was cruel to her characters. And not in a way that makes sense as a writer. She used characters with qualities she didn’t like and treated them badly on purpose. She had the opportunity to address rampant child abuse and instead rationalized it away. Which, frankly, is a very dangerous dynamic in a serious for kids and teens and it pisses me off no end. Dumbledore and Snape’s fans are really just all abuse apologists.
I have extremely dubious views on Rowling’s character as a person based on how she treated her characters - specifically abusive and toxic relationship dynamics. (Dumbledore & Harry, Snape & Lilly, Snape & Harry, Snape & Neville, Snape & Draco, Snape & Lupin, -sensing a theme here - James & Snape, Dursleys & Harry, Lucius & Draco, Neville’s grandmother & Neville)
For example: Draco was designed to be spoiled, cowardly, unpleasant, racist, and narcissistic. Rowling was not subtle about her belief that this child, raised in a deeply dysfunctional and toxic environment, somehow deserves what he later went through and because she decided he was weak, basically collapsed from the strain. The problem I have with this is not that weak characters exist in this universe, but that they’re almost all Slytherin. (Slughorn is the other obvious example of this). She didn’t really bother to develop her Slytherin characters either.
Additionally, there are obvious toxic traits in many of her “good” characters that are either ignored, downplayed, or rationalized. The biggest example: Dumbledore. Also, Snape.
Dumbledore was a villain and an abuser. Granted, he was the most subtle but he was not a good guy. A bumbling, funny personality (which was a very deliberate misdirect btw), does not redeem him.
Snape was a villain and an abuser. Once again, martyrdom does not redeem his abusive treatment of literal children. Also, his obsession with Lilly was not love. Nor was it remotely appropriate.
Lucius was an abuser to both his wife and his son.
The Black family were abusers.
The Dursleys were abusers.
Neville’s grandmother was an abuser.
James was a nasty cruel bully. Granted he didn’t really get a chance to grow up and mature but the kid was an ass.
The fact that there is a rampant theme of kids in abusive families that is never addressed bothers me a great deal. Harry, Neville and Draco all went through horrendous emotional and psychological abuse. Harry was the only one whose trauma was even slightly acknowledged and it was completely rationalized. (He names his kid after 2 of his abusers… wtf, Jo? You wanna know who looked out for you, Harry? It wasn’t either of those assholes. It was Remus, Hagrid, Sirius, Arthur, Molly, Minerva) And while we’re on the topic of Harry’s trauma, you know who understood? Who Harry bonded with immediately? Who would have helped him heal? Sirius. And who gets killed before they can hardly establish a solid relationship? Fucking Sirius. *throws hands in the air*
The Potter series has a reputation of being this wholesome, magic, good vs evil, growing up story but this shit is seriously dark. And not for the reasons that pissed off the evangelicals. And not for the reason that it features a war fought mostly by teenagers.
Draco deserved better. What if the trio had one day become a quartet, huh? IMAGINE the shenanigans that would have ensued. Minerva would have been beside herself. Not to mention the conflict with Snape would have had to have been addressed at some point. (OOH - Minerva defending Draco from Snape after Draco sides with Harry). I believe the only thing keeping Draco from the support of the adults that supported Harry was Snape. He favorited/claimed Draco and in doing so deliberately shielded him from the influence of other adults. Molly would have adopted the shit out of Draco if he’d been Ron’s friend and she found out about his home life. (So would have Fred and George). Arthur would have fought Lucius on the spot. Minerva would have had his back, Gryffindor or no. Hagrid would have made him tea and patted his back awkwardly while Fang drooled in his lap after he had a meltdown over the pressures at home.
I feel like Draco and Harry would have been great friends. They both understood crappy abusive families. Definitely a potential bond there. Friendly(er) competition on the quidditch pitch. Play fights followed by genuine support after a good match. Ron and Draco snarking each other constantly. Hermione’s exasperated attempts at moderating them while Harry sniggers and eggs them on. Draco clearly envied the camaraderie Harry, Ron and Hermione had. He deserved some happiness too. He deserved wholesome relationships. He deserved the chance to learn better dynamics. He deserved better. He deserved the chance to be better.
