I enjoyed this quite a bit. A lot of that was due to it feeling like someone’s creation. I love that I can envisage Kevin Smith writing this and using this premise, two fallen angels finding a loophole to get back into heaven and everyone panicking, to be creative. I find that really exciting. It’s so fun to see people using their energies to make something it seems only they could, even if it’s not perfect.
This is a really good example of likeable characters turning crazy everything else into a positive. There’s a massive cast. Alan Rickman, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock. I guess Kevin Smith must have been kind of a big deal, even though he was still so young. What do I know.
He does really well at the subtle little things that can heighten the humour and make something much more entertaining, like a quick cut away to someone raising an eyebrow, or using a single shot to let the actors just do their thing. This world seemed like it was already in existence before the film began. And the main woman feels like she’s just walked into this movie like we have.
Although, it can seem like it’s less than the sum of its parts. All the really great writing and dialogue, the entertaining un-PC stuff and the not so subtle satire don’t seem to add up to anything spectacular. But, that’s okay. It makes it easy to watch. It’s filled with the kind of humour that feels like - well if you don’t find this funny, we do. But not in an annoying way, it just has a take it or leave it tone that makes it easier to laugh. It’s less forced upon you. The makers seem like they’re having fun, so I did too.
