I have a headcanon that Mr Wizard paid a visit to the circus for one of Max’s last performances there, and got the opportunity to meet Max and give him a crystal (“it’s a Protection Crystal—it’ll keep you safe on your travels!”).

Max, of course, does not remember the encounter AT ALL, and wasn’t really paying attention when this absurdly tall gangly man shoved a rock on his hands, but the crystal is pretty so Max just uses it for jewelry or something (I personally like to imagine it as an earring or an anchor attached to one of his hairties)

However, Mr Wizard is weirdly very happy upon seeing the earring, so Max isn’t gonna question it.
