BEETLEWING SUNDAY!!!!!
An animus has decided to turn you into a dragon... but YOU get to choose which tribe!
What tribe are you becoming?
MudWing
SandWing
SkyWing
SeaWing
RainWing
IceWing
NightWing
HiveWing
SilkWing
LeafWing
BeetleWing
WildWing
If you'd want to be a hybrid, feel free to say what kind. If you'd want to be a pre-Scorching dragon, SharpWing, or fantribe, that's also valid!
Darkstalker: NOOO WHY DID EVERYONE BETRAY ME
Clearsight with Sunstreak in Pantala:
yeah, why did no one make a jitterbug with wof characters yet? and yes, I f%cked up the music sync.
and also gif version (high resolution and original resolution)
answer in advance: yes I DID consider making this sunstalker

Sylvan’s WoF Tribe Redesigns Part 3: IceWings, HiveWings and BeetleWings
SURPRISE!!! It’s a 3-for-one special! I couldn’t design HiveWings without also thinking about BeetleWings, so I did them both. Shoutout to @scaelige for giving me “burgundy” and “crocus” as a color and a flower when I was looking for things to base the BeetleWing’s colors on. No, I did not specify what it was for. Yes, it was a difficult color combination to make work. Using yellow crocuses as a reference helped. Also thanks to @gumywyrm whose BeetleWing headcanons provided a lot of inspiration (and are also just really cool!) And now, without further ado…
IceWings
Along with NightWings, IceWings are one of Pyrrhia’s most unique tribes. They are short and sturdy, similar in size to SeaWings. Their scales are translucent, and all of an IceWing’s color comes from the skin underneath. They have a unique “mane” of quill-like scales on the back of their neck. These quills are also present on the tail. IceWing coloration changes based on their season and environment, with tundra-dwelling IceWings exhibiting more drastic shifts. Even their eyes change from amber or green in the warm season to deep blue during their territory’s period of polar night. Compared to other cold-hardy tribes, IceWings have little subcutaneous fat. They have uniquely serrated talons that help them stay steady when navigating glaciers or rock faces.
The origin of the IceWing tribe has been notoriously difficult to trace. Several explanations have been offered by researchers across the continent, but IceWing historians hold fast to their own theory: that the IceWing tribe was created by an animus during the Scorching. This animus, remembered only as the Great Ice Dragon, was likely not an IceWing at all—though she is one of the first recorded animus dragons in Pyrrhian history. Many legends surround her, including that of IceWing creation. As the Scorching raged on, she sought to create a sanctuary for herself and her followers. She used her animus power to create the IceWings, a tribe uniquely gifted with affinity for the cold, and their kingdom, a place only they could survive. As her descendants discovered their own magic, she instructed them only to use it for the benefit of the Tribe. The lives of her and her descendants make up much of IceWing myth. IceWing historians spend their time deciphering the events behind each legend, as countless retellings have distorted the original tales.
HiveWings
Like their ancestors, HiveWings vary greatly in size, though few are larger than LeafWings. They lack setae (or fur) and antennae, but resemble BeetleWings with multiple horns and thick, plated scales. Their range of color is far more limited, comprised primarily of yellows and oranges. Some HiveWing markings veer into red, green, or even blue hues. Most HiveWings have black patterns and it is not uncommon for black to be the dominant scale or skin color. Black HiveWing scales may exhibit iridescence. Their wing membranes are usually translucent though some segments may be opaque or more pigmented.
HiveWings are known to have the highest variety of abilities of any dragon tribe. The most well-known are stingers and venom, but other noted traits include bioluminescence, acid spray, and even specialized scales that can vibrate to produce sound. These traits are suspected to have also been present in Beetlewings. In recent generations, HiveWing society has valued offensive abilities over others. Meticulous breeding programs were developed by Queen Wasp and her predecessors to preserve these abilities and the image of the "ideal" HiveWing. HiveWings who did not meet these standards, or who hatched with traits associated with SilkWings, were either killed or had said traits surgically removed. These operations were carried out by hatchery guards, usually before HiveWing parents even knew their dragonets had hatched.
BeetleWings
The Pantalan Ancestor Tribe, often called “Beetlewings,” was so variable in size and appearance that their skeletons were previously identified as SilkWings or HiveWings. The realization that they were in fact ancestors has proven that the HiveWing-SilkWing split was more recent than previously thought. The largest BeetleWings were only slightly smaller than MudWings, and the smallest were similar in size to RainWings. Skeletal reconstructions and recovered illustrations show that BeetleWings had up to 6 horn-like structures on the skull, with plated scales along their back and limbs. Their wings are connected to their back via a unique structure that is still present in their modern descendants. Youth specimens have been found with SilkWing-like wing growths, implying they might have undergone metamorphosis. Some fossils have indications of fur or fuzz, but like other traits, this may have been highly variable. Surviving depictions and descriptions of Beetlewings describe all sorts of colors and patterns but it is difficult to know which actually occurred.
Several alternative names have been suggested for the Pantalan ancestor, including ShellWings, HornWings, and StingWings. None of the referenced traits have been consistent enough in ancestor specimens to justify the name. In fact, evidence has led to the conclusion that BeetleWings could have any combination of abilities associated with SilkWings and HiveWings, as well as some Pyrrhian dragons. Researchers have generally agree upon “QuadWings” as a more formal name. The most popular theory describing the HiveWing-SilkWing split assumes that, before the Tree Wars, the split had already begun as different groups settled across Pantala. Natural selection favored individuals with the abilities needed for survival, which varied between environments. This resulted in highly specialized populations. Shortly before the Tree Wars, HiveWing-like dragons began pushing for segregation and adhered to breeding programs which accelerated the genetic bottleneck. The high variation in modern HiveWing and SilkWing traits is thought to be a reflection of their shared ancestor. Traits of QuadWing-NightWing hybrids (as a result of Clearsight and later theorized settlers) are assumed to be present in both SilkWings and HiveWings.
